THE BLOOM PICAYUNE.....
....is one of the funniest things I've ever read.
Not just of things I've read by Berke Breathed, not just of
things I've read in the last ten years....one of the funniest
things I've read, PERIOD. And as far as finding it goes, you have
no hope unless you're reading this page right now. Berke's later
Bloom County books all came with a
"bonus"..."Billy and the Boingers Bootleg"
came with a plastic LP record, "Attack of the Mary Kay
Commandos" came with a perfume sample, but the best bonus
was what came out of the 1988 book, "Tales Too Ticklish To
Tell." Never mind that Breathed somehow got Mikhail
Gorbachev to do the foreword, the best thing in the entire book
was the glued-in piece of paper in the back...the folded piece of
paper that was a "free issue" of the Bloom Picayune,
Bloom County's own newspaper.
All Bloom County books are out of print now, and if you get your
hands on a used one, The Bloom Picayune isn't going to be in
there. There wasn't exactly a folder in the back to tuck it into.
I had to use one of my own folders, and I've had it to this day.
I've saved another work of literary art from obscurity...
