This ad operates under a lot of assumptions. Maybe trends were different in 1983, but I don't see troublesome teenagers hitchhiking every day. The only people I HAVE spotted hitchhiking in my entire lifetime are old bums with dirty clothes.

Second thing: "everybody knows the dangers, but nobody believes the worst can happen"? EVERYBODY believes the worst can happen! That's why few kids are allowed to go out for Halloween anymore! In fact, many modern kids aren't even allowed to go outside at ALL unless they're on a leash. What parent in their right mind would be okay with hitchhiking?
