It's been quite a while since we last looked at rare and expensive items in the video game collector's market. Let's drop back in and see how things are going...

BOXED SUPER MARIO BROS. FOR NES

This is one of the originals sold during the NYC test months in 1985. Back then the boxes weren't shrinkwrapped, they were sealed with a little sticker. An unbroken sticker is super rare for any game in the Black Box line, let amone SMB. Based on my 2010s recollection, this should fetch a few thousand

Heritage Auctions Price: $3,000,000.00

What the......?

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA

Shrinkwrapped and mint, but not quite as rare a specimen. Millions of this cart were sold across the country, and millions more around the world

Heritage Auctions Price: $870,000.00

WHAT THE WHAT THE WHAT???

SUPER MARIO 64

Well, there's tons of this. When the N64 launched it was just about the only game you COULD buy. Everybody with the console had one. So....

Heritage Auctions Price: $1,560,000.00

ERK---GAK---ULK---BLURP---

SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT LEGEND OF ZELDA

Heritage Auctions Price: $700,000.00

I think I may have been gone longer than I thought

Remember those rich nerds I mentioned back in the last TYCEH? Apparently there was this pandemic and it forced everybody to stay home and buy their favorite old video games on eBay, and those rich nerds took the opportunity to bid between themselves and artificially inflate the value of things that have the debut of popular characters on them. A lawsuit is currently ongoing

Perhaps, in the light of all this, anyone entering the game collecting hobby should start with things that are brand new...

PLAYSTATION 5

Over 95 million units are out there already; it's the least rare of anything modern other than the original Switch

Sony plans to stop printing physical discs for it in 2028, leaving you with nothing to collect, and then they followed this announcement by stating on the record that nothing you buy digitally on a Sony console counts as something you own

MSRP: $900 and climbing

Err...maybe skip video games altogether. Focus on a collector's market that's stable and sane, like...maybe Pokemon cards?

NINTENDO PLAYSTATION

Wow, that's cheap! It must be WAY less important to video game history than a copy of Super Mario 64

Collect these instead

Heritage Auctions Price: $360,000

TWO-PLAYER COMPUTER SPACE

The world's first market arcade game; released in 1971, one year before Pong, it was a bit more complicated to grasp than table tennis and never caught on as well

This rarer two-player model was being sold by Shiny Entertainment founder David Perry, who had "run out of space" and "needed room"

RRAuction Winning Bid: $24,923.00

EPOCH CASSETTE VISION

These next few belonged to Jeremy Parish, a reviewer best known for his "Works" series on YouTube, which has the lofty goal of reviewing every single 8-bit and 16-bit video game ever made anywhere in the world

Suffice it to say he has a lot of rare stuff. The Epoch Cassette Vision is a Japanese console sold in 1981 that, despite its name, ran its games on cartridges. This model has been modded to accept an S-Video connection, and is probably the only one to have that done to it

Here's what it looks like in action

eBay Price: $1600.00

GAME BOY ADVANCE FAMICOM MINI COMPLETE COLLECTION

In 2003, the twentieth anniversary of the Famicom, Nintendo re-released thirty classic games for their original console for the Game Boy Advance, in miniature versions of their packaging

The line was released elsewhere as NES Classics, but with a much smaller number of games

eBay Price: $2150.00

VIRTUAL BOY HYPERFLASH32

A flash cart for the Virtual Boy, which lets you load up ROMS of every game that ever came out for the thing, plus all homebrews. It has an "e-ink" label, meaning it changes electronically depending on the game you have loaded

Since the market for such a thing is so small, there aren't many of them around. Jeremy was actually being nice with this price...other Hyperflash32s listed that day cost at least a hundred more

eBay Price: $525.00

XENOGEARS FEI AND ELLY COLLECTIBLE FIGURES

Everything Parish was selling was related to his business and life calling, except for one thing: these two figures

"As a bonus, these figures also come with a chair and a crucifix on a chain so that you can recreate the exciting framing scenes from Disc 2," said Jeremy

eBay Price: $295.00

NINTENDO HYUNDAI SUPER COMBOY

In Korea the Super NES was sold as the "Comboy." But Hyundai was involved? The car manufacturer?

It appears so; their logo is on the back of the machine

eBay Price: $2000.00

GAME BOY ADVANCE SP SIGNED BY GINGER SPICE

If you wanna be her lover, you gotta get her ratty-looking handheld device for a million bucks

Make it last forever

eBay Price: $1,000,000.00

TWO PS2S THAT ARE YELLOW

The seller claims a yellow PS2 is the rarest PS2 of all, and that only 2,000 exist, of which he has two

He estimates their value at around $7,500,000 each

eBay Price: $15,000,000.00

COMPLETE FAMICOMBOX

Used to rent time on NES games in Japanese hotels. This has turned up before, but never in such a complete state, with the coin box, keys to open it, and ten games

eBay Price: $7500.00

BEDAZZLED DS LITE WITH ZELDA ART

Not a homemade creation. This was a one-of-a-kind model "visually enhanced" by high-end boutique store Swarovsky and sold exclusively at Nintendo's New York store

They also offered a Mario version

eBay Price: $115,700.00

PLAYSTATION 2 KIOSK

So how much are the kiosks going for these days? Not as much as I figured, given the cost of everything else

But I bet the yellow ones are worth far more

eBay Price: $3471.00

NINTENDO 64 KIOSK

I tried to look up the last time I featured a Nintendo 64 kiosk here, just to compare the prices...and surprisingly found nothing. I've never shown an N64 kiosk here? That can't be right

Note that in this case, the CRT has been replaced with a flatscreen, so the Funcoland experience will not be 100% authentic

eBay Price: $7000.00

TREAMCAST

The portable Dreamcast. A homebrew mod and not official, but comes with its own padded case that has room for the plug and a controller

I was going to say "just get a Steam Deck and emulate the Dreamcast wherever you go for far less," but Steam Decks are hard to get at the present time, so...the $5000 Treamcast might once again be your best option

eBay Price: $4999.97

SEGA AI

One of Sega's rarest attempts to compete in the computer space, released only in Japan in 1986

The only 80s computer I've ever seen where the keyboard is optional; instead it accepted inputs through the touchpad on the main unit. Software (on cassette or Sega's MyCard format) came with overlays you would place on the touchpad, like a higher-tech Intellivision controller

22 games were released over the next three years

eBay Price: $12,995.00

You can get it for nothing, though, by finding a venture capitalist and telling him "I need $13K to invest in AI."

SEALED BLISTER PACK OF NINTENDO 64, OCARINA OF TIME AND "ATOMIC PURPLE" CONTROLLER STUCK TOGETHER FOREVER

The seller calls this "THE RAREST N64" based on its roommates alone, which both you and I know is not true

FUNKY FACT: The "Atomic Purple" logo was created by the same guy who came up with the Pokemon logo

eBay Price: $217,500.00

PSP "FF7 CRISIS CORE" LIMITED EDITION WITH GAME, MEMORY CARD AND MINI BUSTER BLADE

There were several of these for sale at the time I wrote this. What's listed here is the cheapest price for one

eBay Price: $765.00

SEALED POKEMON BOX, JAPANESE WIND WAKER

These two were from the same seller, and the whole thing breaks my brain. Look at this

eBay Price for Pokemon Box: $690,420.69
eBay Price for Wind Waker: $1,199,420.69

Pokemon Box is the rarest and most valuable Gamecube disc around. I don't know if it's $700K valuable, but it's very valuable. Wind Waker is one of the most common GC discs and, even unopened and slabbed, is NOT worth twice as much as Pokemon Box

What's the seller's rationale (whose name is Chris) for rating it so high? As he screamed in the title of the listing, "PREDATES NORTH AMERICAN RELEASE BY 13 WEEKS!"

This is evidence enough that the man is a complete dope who will never sell anything, but all the 420s and 69s in the prices he gave them should silence all doubters

I'm shocked he didn't throw a 6-7 in there

"MASSIVE VIDEO GAMES COLLECTION AND MORE!!!"

It certainly looks massive, but when I hunted for a listing of each item, I found nothing. All the seller wrote was "10k for 20k worth of goods let’s go!"

So...if what's implied here is correct, do I get ALL the things shown in the seven pictures he uploaded? All the games? The shelving? The music keyboard? The unopened Hot Wheels cars? The shorts on the floor? The Insane Clown Posse poster?

eBay Price: $10,000.00

By the way, the shipping price is listed at just $20, which I can't stop giggling about. He is going to take an absolute BATH on that

COMPLETE BOXED VECTREX GAME COLLECTION

Finally, a sane listing. Yes, that is a rare collection, and that is an appropriate price for it

....moving on

eBay Price: $510.00

NEO GEO ARCADE STICK PRO "MERRY CHRISTMAS" VARIANT

This is not the original arcade stick sold with the Neo Geo. It's a fairly modern reprint, one of those things that has a bunch of games pre-loaded into it. You plug the controller directly into the TV and play the games; you've seen this before

Seller claims "Ultra Rare....Last Unopened One Ever?" He's not sure if it is. Better price it at over a grand just to be sure

eBay Price: $1282.67

NES CLASSIC

Speaking of plug 'n plays, remember this one?

Well, it may not be QUITE like you remember. It's a display model meant to show in stores. In this case, that means it's empty. It's just a shell with nothing inside, and these stickers on the back

I think I paid about $60 for a full one

eBay Price: $521.16

NEW NINTENDO 3DS PROTOTYPE UNIT

Now, for just $10.64 more than the empty NES Classic, you can have this nearly one-of-a-kind prototype for the New Nintendo 3DS. The outer shell is white and the inner shell is black, like a Reverse Oreo

eBay Price: $531.80

PS VITA WITH HATSUNE MIKU PAINT JOB

Gotta admit, I've never understood the whole deal with Hatsune Miku and why there is such a rabid fanbase over just a vocaloid mascot with nothing else to her

Like...what does she DO? What is her personality? I like Monkey D. Luffy because he's goofy and cheerful and naive and gets into all sorts of adventures. Where is that kind of substance with Miku? Give me a reason to care

eBay Price: $1147.50

97 UNUSED COPIES OF SUPER MARIO BROS / DUCK HUNT

To wrap things up, let's see how much people will pay now for the most common, most worthless NES game in the world

What makes these different is...they're an unusual variant. They are copyrighted 1993, well after NIntendo stopped packing in the combo cart with each NES sold. So how do they exist? What was their purpose?

We may never know, but 97 of them were found in storage, wrapped in plastic like Laura Palmer. Their owner made a hullaballoo to attract the media, and then he put three of them up for auction

Goldin Auctions Price (as of press time): $5850.00

He made a crucial mistake with this: if you're trying to get the maximum value out of something rare, you don't openly admit you have a lot more of them

A JOB APPLICATION THAT STEVE JOBS FILLED OUT IN 1973

No, I don't know where he was applying to work...there is no info on the sheet about what place this was meant for

That Simpsons joke about the valuable TV Guide owned by Jackie Kennedy isn't far off the mark from reality. Though this has zero bids thus far

What's depressing is that below this, there was a drawing of Goku by Akira Toriyama himself going for far less. Also, that GBA signed by Ginger Spice is being offered at ten times this

Goldin Auctions Price: $100,000.00
