January's Game of the Month: The Castlevania series

Hint: I already had it done when I made that post, I was not having a problem jumping across the waterfall. Like dozens of other people on the OoE board, the problem was getting your character up from the ground level in the first place. There is exactly one position you can stand that allows you to not hit your head on the rock or get pushed down by the waterfall.

It's problematic to find a place in the sticky topic there.

It's kind of a rule of thumb in gaming that if you want to get height from a jump, you don't start that jump waist-deep in water. But if you try to jump from the solid flooring on the right, you will either hit your head on a portion of wall that has no reason to be solid, or you will touch the waterfall while trying to curl around it. And even if you do start from the water, if you don't do it from just the right spot the same thing will happen.

In any case, this was the least painful collectathon in the Metroidvania series. I still wish they'd stop making me crack open a guide to see the last half of their games, but at least it wasn't time consuming.

Alright here we go, Drac's castle.

Does anyone know what year this takes place in? Have they abandoned the last of their acknowledgment of the 100 year rule?

^No one knows yet. You can make guesses because we know that OoE takes place before Bloodlines, after SotN, and in the 19th century.

The Death Ring is so eff'n broken, I love it.

The fight with the giant knight guy was ridiculous to figure out, but it's definitely a highlight. I'm still not sure if I enjoy this combat any more than PoR or DoS, but I think I'm going to replay those two after this one to refresh my memory.

I should be coming up to the end of the game soon, and I still have two villager quests to do (Cashmere threads and some Large Cavern thing). The Training Hall is fun.

I'm wicked stuck on the shadow boss in Drac's Castle in OoE.

After this, I want to play SotN and DoS, my first and second favorites, respectively.

I still maintain that Super Castlevania IV is the best game of the series followed closely by Simon's Quest. If I get the energy I'll rewrite my diatribe on why this is so.

'Got all Glyphs, finished Monster Book, and then beat the game. The final boss was really crappy, even without using the uber-cheap insta-kill tactics, and the ending was cookie cutter.

'Will try for all Medals this playthrough--I think I got Dracula's already.

Yeah, I ended up using Nitesco and doubling it up. Also, the Onyx jewelry which protected against Darkness, and the Diamond jewelry which enhanced Light attack made it a cakewalk.

I beat OoE. Dracula was really, really hard until I found his pattern, at which point I could potentially beat him without getting hit.

I started Portrait of Ruin again, my least favorite of the Castlevania games to come out in the past 10 years (not including the GBA games, of which I only cared for Aria of Sorrow). I still hate the main characters and the notion/some of the paintings, but at least its an interesting concept. Can't wait to get to Symphony of the Night and Dawn of Sorrow. So good.

100% for me as well. The first Boss Rush was many times more annoying than the second, if only for having to face the crab boss over and over again.

PoR was the first post-NES Castlevania game that I played, and it's what got me into the rest of the series. I liked its layout, its bosses, its use of quests, and its item and combat system, although I can see how DoS is the "better game". Still, there's little that I don't like about it, so it's not to put it down or anything. It has the best soundtrack in the series, in my opinion, even over SC4 and CV3.

If it wasn't for the flat sections like Ruvas Forest and the crappy crappy crappy final boss fight, I'd put OoE at the same level as the other two DS Castlevanias, but as it stands it's a little bit below.

I haven't played the game in days. I've only tried Blackmore twice, and I haven't been frustrated, but I just don't feel like fighting him. I feel like I spend more time fighting bosses than I do actually exploring or fighting regular enemies. It took me like 20 minutes to get through the portion of the castle between the last boss and this one, and I know I'll be trying Blackmore 5 times before I even get to see all of his moves. It's just not a compelling experience.

I really want to press on, we'll see.

Got the glyph, done Boss Rush three times (need to do more to get all the items).

AV, double Nitesco works pretty well on Blackmore (not the glyph union, just spam the combo).

Bosses hit really hard in this game, so there's not much of a point in trying to beef up your defense to cope with it. Instead, focus everything you have into attack (or INT, if you're using magic), so that you can finish off the boss as fast as possible. For Blackmore, Nitesco is, as Crow mentioned, quite good, so steal it off a Nova Skeleton, equip two of them, set your R button Glyph to the "increase INT" spell (which I think you have at this point in time), put on all your INT-raising equipment, and then just keep using it on him while dodging his attacks. The general rule of thumb for him is to stay with your back against the back wall (use the back dash to position yourself), and then be high or low as appropriate. Make sure to move forward for the fireball attack, though.

You get combos by putting two of the same weapon on your face buttons?

Like I said I wasn't frustrated with Blackmore, I just don't feel like doing it. 20 minutes on a boss per 10 minutes of traveling through linear hallways is unrewarding. Maybe I'll pop it in at another time but I am not compelled to pick it up.

Really? I always found bosses to be the most interesting parts of the Casteltroid games I enjoyed, so a game that focuses more on bosses seems like a better alternative to me than a Castletroid game that focused more on going through areas and less on fights.

I just beat PoR.

I think my main concern in this game is the focus on the paintings instead of the Castlevania "world" or the castle itself. Dracula's castle somehow got very, very small and simple compared to all the other resurrection years.

The characters didn't impress me either. Bringing in the Morris family and the Eric/Loretta/Stella family without much explanation is kind of lame, and then trying to milk that for emotion as Jonathan gets all sentimental over his father and grandfather is even lamer.

Trying to track down DoS tonight.
