Changed number 11 into the even less pronounceable "11 Misc. playable appearances". There's also one mistake, but it's intentional. Sort of. "Alright, well, if you guys remember a topic I made from a few weeks ago, I told you guys that I had finished school and was looking for a job as a teacher. No jobs became available, but I was hired as a substitute teacher for my local area's school district. I wasn't sure how to react to this, but a job is a job. I got my first call-in today, so it was my first day of class. They told me I'd be teaching a health class that was starting a section on sex education today. I really wasn't sure how it was going to go, and I thought that it might be trouble working with teenage kids on an issue like sex education. So, once I got into the classroom I calmed down a little. I split the class up into two groups, male and female, and then had them count themselves. I paired up the guys and girls based on their numbers, and there was one girl left over. I told her she could be with me. I proceeded to show them the correct way to do things, and then the incorrect way to do them. I had everyone clear the tables and follow after my example. Well, the class got a little loud, which caused the principal to come in and see what was going on. Apparently she didn't approve of my teaching methods and kicked me out of the school right then." - MBSowards I'm gonna look for quotes on CE now... Maybe it'll help me avoid my NGG addiction. --- "All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others." - Douglas Adams |

I noticed something interesting every time I tried to traipse my way through a survival horror game, like F.E.A.R. for example. Certain things will set off my "F-That-O-Meter" more than others. I.e-- A hallway with a light that flickers on cue as you start to make headway down it, and a door at the end that is flanked by signs that say "Do Not Enter". When I see that, I generally think "Hmm... signs are there for a reason. I'm not going in there." and park my ass outside the door for an indeterminate amount of time until I work up the courage to walk through. And I thought... how much of a persistant mind-screw would it be have a game that notices that, and reacts to that? In that... let's say I am playing the game, and I come to a fork where I may choose to go along a path that goes up flimsy, metal stairs onto platforms in the air or a water filled area. I choose the metal stairs. Later, I might come to another fork where I might choose between a dark, boiler-room type area, or another flooded room. After choosing the dark-boiler room area, the game would "notice" that perhaps I am afraid of being in water (which is true, the 360 degree area of susceptibility, and general "murkiness" that allows me not to be able to see 2 feet in front of me doesn't sit well with me) as as a result-- put me in a position later in the game where I have no choice but to "face my fears" and go into an area filled with water. This concept would encompass the game as a whole, so... if along the way I saw a spider on the wall, I decided to destroy it with the utmost of prejudice and FAR too many bullets and force than necessary-- it is very likely that I will come across more spiders in less-than-inviting methods. To me this would be very, very immersive. --the most intelligent response to IGN Boards' request for game concept ideas. That concept is basically what Silent Hill should have been, as a way to tie its theme to how the gameplay actually works. 2nd Anniversary of this topic today! Why do you play games? "I don't really feel I go into videogames from the perspective of someone looking for a videogame to play; I'm looking for something on a more human level, to maybe contribute something to my life for the time I spend playing. That might be an abstract intellectual observation, as in the game systems of a Treasure game, or it might be emotionally-based, as in Silent Hill. I don't play videogames simply because they're videogames, though. I don't give a **** about videogames for their own sake; I'm only interested in what they can do for me." -aderack --- The Scientist knows. "Look around you. Just look around you. Presenting the full version of the Seanbaby review of "Catz" that's been in my sig for a while. "This game is perfect if you always wished you could pretend to raise a pet, but couldn't find the time. Catz is designed for the very stupid, so it will take care of most of the hard thinking for you. This freed up my brain to realize that we as a society haven't come up with an insulting way of describing people who play games about imaginary pet ownership. Shouldn't such a specific time of lonely nerding have a label? Luckily, I've spent hundreds of hours inventing a social slur to describe them: "petsturbator." I think it could really catch on. For example, "I saw some guy petsturbating in the subway!" And if petsturbator doesn't stick, I wrote a backup: "Phil Collins." Because pretending to own a cat is exactly the kind of thing Phil Collins would do. Fun Foreign Fact #1: In Vietnam, Catz goes by the name Trainable Sandwichez. Fun Foreign Fact #2: In Vietnam, the unit of currency is the dong. So it's totally concievable to say, "Where did my dong go? I just put it on the table a second ago." And that would almost certainly lead to the follow-up question, "Vietnam, why did you let Phil Collins name your money?" --- "In Vietnam, 'Catz' goes by the name 'Trainable Sandwichez.'" --Seanbaby www.platypuscomix.net |

"In my mind, Nintendo is like a wonderful old friend who has a drinking problem. You like the friend, you like to spend time with the friend, but every so often bad behaviors come up and remind you that this friend has problems. Like the old friend with the drinking problem, Nintendo is quick to fess up to old faults. "Yes, we really screwed up using cartridge format on N64. Yes, we did not support GameCube the way we said we would. Yes, we have been hard on third-party publishers in the past. Virtual Boy... oh, what were we thinking?" Responses in a Kotaku post regarding a Weekly Reader poll that said children want PS3 the most and Wii the least: They'll choose a banana covered with Shrek stickers over a cupcake too. From NGG: http://ms.nintendo-europe.com/wii/?site=v5_10.html&expand=5&l=enGB Miyamoto: It's a well-known fact that Zelda games always have signposts that can be sliced apart by the player. The village at the beginning of this game is no exception. However in this game, finally, the pieces you cut off can be picked up! All: (roaring laughter) Aonuma: And of course, if you throw them into the river they float. All: (laughter) Miyamoto: They really do float. The reason we enabled the player to pick up the pieces and carry them was because there were no signposts right by the river. Aonuma: Exactly! (laughs) If you don't take them and throw them into the river, they're not going to float. Miyamoto: And because we've made it so the pieces float, it'd be a real waste if the player didn't get to see this. That's why we let them pick them up, carry them to the river and throw them in! Setting up this feature took us about the same time as it did to work on one of the horses! (laughs) Iwata: A fine example of putting the cart before the horse! (laughs) Miyamoto: It really was! (laughs) Aonuma: We often couldn't be sure which was the horse and which was the cart! (laughs) --- The Scientist knows. "Look around you. Just look around you.
