I'm really into Death Note lately. I initially stayed away from the manga because I noticed a lot of girls liked it, which made me think that there were a lot of pretty boys and romance in the series. How wrong I was. I've been watching the anime on [adult swim] and love it. It's intriguing, interesting, and makes you scream out "NOOOO!" when "To Be Continued-" appears on the screen. Light is an awesome character. I love how soft-spoken and how he fakes being nice when he's interacting with other people. He's gone from an intelligent, bored high-schooler to a psychopath in seven episodes! --- Zvarri! |

I find the voices in the English dub don't always fit how the characters were in the manga. L and Ryuk, especially. L is too laid back and calm and collected in the anime, and I find Ryuk to be too squeaky and high pitched. I do like L's voice, but just doesn't really seem to fit his kinda wacked out and nervous personality. Some of the animation tricks are awesome though, mainly the simple but effective use of camera shake during intense moments. I remember one scene where the whole Yagami family was eating supper and they were talking about Kira, and the camera was kind of swaying around, making it seem somewhat surreal, like how you get when you know if you're not careful, you're gonna get into some serious ****. The manga was great over all, but went somewhat downhill about half way through, and I found the alternative ending to be much better than the real one. It's still worth the effort and time to follow the story, but just be warned that you may/probably will not like the ending. --- Boy and girls in cars. Dogs and cats on lawns. Yeah, the manga version of Death Note is a lot better than the anime, at least IMO. Something about it just makes it better...though I'm not really sure what. I mean, with the FMA manga, the extra plot points just made it more interesting for me, but with Death Note...meh, it could be the VA. Although I really do like Light's VA... --- Scream your dying breath! http://www.varisangel.net - L, on the other hand... |

In the simplest explanation possible, it is about two geniuses playing mind games with each other, trying to get the upperhand. More in depth, Light Yagami gets a hold of a Death Note, a book that Death Gods, Shinigami, use to kill people. He uses this to kill bad people; murderers, rapists, whatever. Unfortunately, because of the modern legal system, he himself is considered a murderer, and so the police and an incredible investigator, who is independant of the police, L (that's his name), try to hunt him down. There isn't much action, but the drama and interplay between characters is incredible. The Death Gods themselves don't play a huge part, but are more of a way to create the setting, although one is a fairly main character, and a couple others appear later on. --- Boy and girls in cars. Wow, I know which side Nee thinks is right. One thing I really like about Death Note i that Light, while the main character, is by no means the "good guy": though he kills criminals, he's not above killing people who get in his way, and a good part of the series revolves around this sort of battle of wits between Light and L, where each one tries to get the upper hand on the other, L's goal being to bring Light to justice and Light's goal being to kill L without being exposed as the mastermind. It's definitely a shounen series, but it's significantly more mental than other shounen series, which are often purely about action. --- "The world is a sphere. I think Light has good motivation, but obviously doesn't have the abilities or quite enough knowledge to pull it off. By abilities, I mean that if he were actually a Death God or whatever, then he'd be untouchable, and wouldn't have people really getting in his way. ...Poor Ray Penber. --- Boy and girls in cars. I'm gonna start collecting more FMA cause I love it. My third collector's tin (which I scored for $20) is coming in the mail soon. I got Love*Com vol 3 but haven't read it yet. Also have a volume of Initial D and two volumes of Tenjou Tenge to read. Currently downloading KimiKiss episode 8. Dunno why I'm watching it really, but I don't see any reason to stop. Looking forward to this week's Genshiken. This season is a whole lot better than the last season. Still can't bring myself to watch more Gurren Lagann. Rat Guy, where did you stop? The series kind of slows down in the 18-21 range, but only so that it can kick thrice as much ass in 22-27. Princess Tutu is a great series; people should watch it. Saber Marionette J was pretty good. I never got around to watching the rest of the stuff in the Saber Marionette series, though, like J to X, or R, or some of those other letters. 6 is partially a recap episode, so you could probably skip to the second half of it. Hell, you could probably skip the entire thing, it adds nothing to the plot, just watch the last minute or so, and then move on to Episode 7 and 8, and then the rest of the series. --- "The world is a sphere. Rat Guy, Episode 7's actually where it starts being different. And it's really funny watching how they handled it in the US version and how the characters always dance to it when you know what it was originally about. --- Zvarri! |
|
Impossible II Posted 12/9/2007 8:54:19 PM message detail |
The real clincher there is the actions of the dance. The dub keeps those too, right? Because then they haven't done a very good job of hiding what the song is actually about. Kind of terrifying that this is perfectly normal in a kids show in Japan. I guess everyone needs to learn to grope breasts at some point. One of the few things I don't like about this show is that other than the main two characters and their utterly useless friend with nothing to do with the plot, every "major" character only appears sporadically. I'm told they show up more later on, but it would be better if some had a more prominent role now... Some really awesome episodes have come out of things like two characters teaming up, I don't want to have to wait forever for more of that. Also, you just can't have too much Folgore, but I haven't seen him in a while where I am (only that song keeps showing up). --- 'All opinions are not equal. Even worse than that is how constantly and inappropriately the song shows up. On two separate occasions, characters use it in an attempt to perform some kind of ritual. With the dance included, and little kids among those dancing. And then there's Wife-san... But wait! There's more! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc0JRy-JloM "Big... I marathoned the GTO live-action series and sequel movie. Let me tell you: if you've seen any of the manga or anime and enjoyed it even a little bit, or if you've heard of GTO and were somewhat interested in checking it out, look for the live action series. I was skeptical at first, too, having seen a good deal of the anime. But I was convinced after just one episode: the live action series is significantly better than the anime. I'm also planning to get Karas: The Revelation when I'm at the mall this evening for work. R.O.D. is awesome, I guess a little like a James Bond flick with some X-Men type powers thrown in, and Karas feels like a love child born of The Matrix, Batman and Serial Experiments Lain.
