Great PA today: http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2006/20061218.jpg Emerging from the dim cavern of the Electronics Boutique into the fully lit mall, I blinked several times and tried to adjust. A single, determined bat still clung to my sleeve. I shook him off, as gently as he allowed, and tried to remember why I shopped for games in a place covered in lichen. There have been numerous instances over this densely packed holiday season where I would be rebuffed by dedicated gaming retailers for not preordering popular games, only to go across the street to Best Buy (a store I utterly detest) where a young woman simply opens a locked case, and inside this case is a stack of Dead Risings (or whatever) twenty deep. At no point was I required to thumb-wrestle a cashier, bow my head in contrition, or leave the store empty-handed. I could never make sense of it, until my last visit. When it comes to the management of a business, as long as people are not shot, drugged, or enslaved in the course of its standard operation I understand that a certain amount of ruthlessness and treachery may enter in. I put together the idea that they pushed pre-orders to the extent that it allowed them to truly refine their margins. That may be a part of it, but I think it's a side-effect: I think they sell just enough product to maintain their fabulously lucrative used business, and no more. No other theory resonates so completely. I love the store I go to, because the men and women who operate it are genuine enthusiasts with an encyclopedic knowledge of the medium. But the corporation's strange aversion to new product has made them a poor choice for the true, day one devotee. They tend to buy new, they don't need a disc cleaner, and they often eschew strategy guides - opting instead for online assistance. It's the worst sort of customer for their model. Try to imagine another shop working this way, and you may find your mind's normal operation interrupted. There is, of course, one other business that operates in this fashion: a pawn shop. All they need is a couple firearms and a sketchy MFer, and the illusion will be complete. --- Join in on One of GameFAQs' Most Historic Boards: ZSB http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/gentopic.php?board=548 {åß} |

I still need to get around to playing The Sands of Time. Too bad it's impossible to find anything here. I don't care how good Edge's reviews are, their scoring never ceases to be pure garbage. Excite Truck (Wii, Nintendo): 6 Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii, Ubisoft): 6 WarioWare: Smooth Moves (Wii, Nintendo): 8 Trauma Centre Second Opinion (Wii, Atlus): 6 Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam (Wii, Activision): 5 Castlevania Portrait of Ruin (NDS, Nintendo): 8 Elite Beat Agents (NDS, Nintendo): 7 Yoshi’s Island DS (NDS, Nintendo): 6 Gunpey DS (NDS, Namco Bandai): 6 Phoenix Wright Justice for All (NDS, Capcom): 6 No. Just, no. About ten times over. Excite Truck probably deserves more, Rayman definitely does, Trauma Center deserves about three full points more, Elite Beat Agents is sickeningly underrated, and YIDS is not in the same league as the crappy licensed games that get scores like that. Nor is FREAKING PHOENIX WRIGHT, YOU DUMBASSES. Oh, I just LOVE how preconceptions and other games affect reviews. --- "All opinions are not equal. Excite Truck doesn't deserve more. I played it some more, it just isn't that great, and I usually like those kinds of games. Trauma Center barely qualifies as a remake, although if you're judging it solely on its own merits I would say you're right (didn't read the review). Rayman, all things considered, would be a 7-8 now, but a year from now the 6 will probably look about right when better stuff comes along. --- Polas' Goodtime Retro Cafe - http://www.goodtimeretrocafe.com/ Grand Polas Champion - Blistered Otter |

I bought both versions of Zelda, such are the benefits of advanced management of a video game store (where the negatives are low wages, angry customers and smells coming from human beings that belong in fiction novels). The Gamecube version is truly the "real" version, as the map is synched to OoT, but the Wii version, once the controller is mastered, is more fun (and actually available - that's a huge plus.) Riding on Epona and leading the bow to pick off a target in the head with an arrow feels. . . well, fun. Now that I have that game in my portfolio, I too shall replay Wind Waker in great anticipation of Phantom Hourglass. That, and Chrono Trigger, because it's ****ing Chrono Trigger. By the way, it's been a while. Hey everybody. --- After careful non-conscious concentration and consideration, Radiohead makes the absolute best music. |
Impossible II Posted 12/19/2006 3:42:21 AM message detail |
*TP SPOILERS* How is the GCN version's map at all like OoT? The desert and Death Mountain are both much too far south, Zora's Domain is still wrong, the Temple of Time is wrong... East-west alignment doesn't change the fact that the map is way off. If anything, the Wii version has the better map - if you rotate it to fix the position of Death Mountain and the Temple of Time, almost everything fits perfectly into place, except Zora's Domain. It's a weird misconception, that the GameCube version has the better map. I at least found Excite Truck to be fun enough to deserve more an a 6.0. A lot of those other scores are just travesties. --- "All opinions are not equal. I would be using it for both VC and GCN games, so I'm leaning towards the Hori controller, but using a SNES controller would be pretty ideal for actually playing SNES games (and should still work for Ikaruga). Some interesting news about Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. http://www.thehylia.com/index.php?subaction=showfull&id=1166560146&archive=&start_from=&ucat=5& I know JC covered most of this, but the NeoGAF thread was really light on info. Other sources, most noteably CVG, have confirmed that Nintendo Dream revealed that Nintendo of America, Inc, had issues with the voice actor used for Link in previous titles. They reveal Sasanuma Akira was penned for the role of Link's voice in Phantom Hourglass, though he is also the voice actor for Link in Twilight Princess, replacing Nobuyuki Hiyama as the voice of Adult Link. It seems NOA wants continuity with Link's voice, and the original Phantom Hourglass voice actor for Link was replaced with the TP guy. CVG also says they've verified with Nintendo that Phantom Hourglass is pushed back to late 2007, which The Hylia first reported was revealed in Game Informer #165 - which gave a specific date of October 15th. Nintendo Dream said the game was nearing completion and had a target release date of "early" 2007, though on NCL's release schedule, it is not listed through March 2007. While some have speculated there is "voice acting" in Phantom Hourglass as a result of this news, anyone at E3 2006 will know there was voice work for Link...in the form of yells and grunts. If you watch the trailer, you will see this for yourself. Keep checking back as we'll update you first when news hits about Phantom Hourglass. I have a feeling Phantom Hourglass is getting a massive retooling. I predict we're going to see a different graphical style when we next see it. TP Link's voice just does not go with the WW style. --- MOTHER 3 (º< i have the solution to your problem just lisen carefu*firmware update* -Mamonsoti Djinn |

The Hori pad is badass, the only drawbacks are lack of wireless (shared by the Wii classic controller) and lack of analog sticks, which dosen't effect you if you're using it for Non-N64 Virtual Console playing. Um, wouldn't "continuity" with Link's voice actually be using a single consistent voice actor for every game with the same Link in it? Using a realistic Adult Link voice actor for a cel-shaded Young Link is a bit weird. Keeping WW's actor would make a lot more sense. Wait, so, those games are completely free? Crap, I'm not going to be home to download them, unless I can get my brother to do it... I doubt they'll remain free after Christmas Day (assuming they will be at all in Australia). All three look pretty awesome, too, but at the same time I'm not sure if I'd pay for any of them - the only one I've played and am certain about is one I already own. The problem with the Hori Controller is that it won't in any way substitute my need for a Classic Controller. In particular, it won't even fix the SNES button configuration problem which is currently making me not want to touch F-Zero. I was going to wait for an N64-based Wii attachment, although I have no idea when a third party will make one... But the Hori one would really only be that useful to me as a GCN controller, something the Classic Controller should be completely capable of being but isn't. The Classic Controller is only wired to the Wiimote, though, right? What seems incredibly stupid is that from what I've heard, there's no longer a clip on the back to connect them, even though the early versions had one. That would be nice, since it's basically wireless otherwise. The Classic Controller is in general a disappointment, since it was practically MADE for GCN games. --- "All opinions are not equal. http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/5980/7004/nintendo-wii-christmas-lights-controller.phtml Festive decorations interfere with Nintendo Wii controls Wii's don't like Christmas trees by Stuart Miles 22 December 2006 - First is was fears over the strap not being strong enough, now it seems Nintendo is issuing a warning for its Nintendo Wii games console that having festive decorations near your television might cause your new games console to work erratically. Nintendo has issued a warning saying that gamers should avoid bright lights shining near televisions while they play following reports that fairy lights were causing problems with the Wii's remote control sensor. While homebrew stories have been appearing on the web suggesting that you can go for the rather low-tech option of candles to pick up the movements of the Wii's motion sensored remote controller for some time, Nintendo has now admitted that direct lights, like those found on a Christmas tree could cause interference in "exceptional conditions". Such conditions are "where the Wii sensor bar is sat near a direct light source there may be some minor interference - this does not mean that there is any fault with your Wii". "For the best performance of your Wii, avoid bright light sources behind or near the TV, shining towards the Wii remote or reflecting off the TV screen", the company recommends. http://bestof.ign.com/2006/ I love how I thought almost all of GameSpot's awards were utter garbage, and yet I find almost all of IGN's to be reasonably accurate and not too biased. They've only announced system-specific awards so far, and Elite Beat Agents took a whole bunch for the DS, including DS GotY over NSMB (both got 9.5). It deserves those awards, I believe six of them plus one for Inis as best developer (not sure why they get it for just one game when Nintendo has made a few great ones). Buy it. Incredible game. Giving it Best Story is kind of funny, but I don't disagree. They are most definitely wrong about best online multiplayer, though - screw MPH, Clubhouse Games is nearly all playable online, and without a single limitation in any of the games, and Picto Chat support. Eight players, too, which no other online game has bothered to do (because Tetris is system-intensive), and it didn't even get runner-up. Why don't they have a Best Platformer category? Action obviously isn't right, or NSMB would have won that. Yay, Gunstar Heroes for best VC game. Rayman got a couple of awards I would have expected TP to get easily, so that's... interesting. And no Trauma Center, ah well. There weren't many Wii games really able to win awards in the first place, hell, a few don't have runner-ups. --- "All opinions are not equal. It's pretty funny, especially if you're not a cynic like me. Most of the minigames are fun, with a good-sized handful that are definite keepers. I'd recommend it, I dunno about $50 though. I got it for 25. I'll try EBA if I have money to burn (pretty likely). As a matter of fact, I have a stack of BBuy Rewards points that I was going to use on Lost Planet, maybe I'll use it on EBA. I'm kinda bitter at the Angry Nintendo Nerd. Sure, thanks to one of his videos, interest in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has built up again. The problem is that most of it is uninformed and negative. This isn't really different from before, except now it's a lot more outspoken and faddy. It's annoying when a decent video on the game goes up on YouTube (Sly Dog Studios did a tip video for the game that serves as an excellent counterpart to my writings on the subject, and another player posted the second ending) and almost every comment is along the lines of "why are you people playing this game in the first place?" Combine this with how the gameplay footage in ANN's video is the equivalent of running into the first Goomba in SMB and giving up on the game immediately afterward. As always, I agree that the game sucks. I just wish people would a) know why, and b) not dismiss the game entirely as a result. I don't bash games I haven't played. Most of my other complaints about ANN can be summed up with SomethingAwful's FFF (in the Flash section. |

Wario Ware is Wario Ware. Of course it's good. I do think, though, that in making a console version they should have made it longer than the GBA ones, which it doesn't seem to be. Apparently they came up with over a thousand microgames and only put 200 or so in the game. Obviously we don't want repetitive, pointless games that do things already accomplished in other games, but somehow I doubt they had 800 crap ones. I didn't think it bombed, it was one of the better selling Wii games. People can't find the Wii, which may be the problem. Wario Ware Touched was a million seller there, though, so I would expect a lot more. Now Zelda, THAT seems to have bombed because the hardcore Nintendo fan simply does not exist in Japan anymore. Nintendo lost them all to Sony. Observe: http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/12/24/overheard-in-the-teachers-room/ Teacher 1: What about that new Nintendo remote? Teacher 2: Wii? Teacher 1: Yeah, my daughter wants that one. Teacher 3: If you don’t have it now you are not getting it. Teacher 2: I got one for my son but I can’t find the Doubutsu no Mori (Animal Crossing) software anywhere. Vinnk (trying to be helpful): It’s not made for the Wii, but you can play the Gamecube one on the Wii. Teacher 2: What’s a Gamecube? That says it all, I think. The Wii is the successor to the DS, not the GameCube. Has anyone actually seen a PS3? I keep hearing stories about them sitting on store shelves, but I'm having a hard time believing it. So, apparently supply and demand are much more in line than the eBayers who lined up at launch led us to believe. Do I need Portrait of Ruin? Will it be rare like DoS was? I'm thinking I should probably pick it up, but I was never even a Castlevania fan before the DS, so I don't know. I want to find that GBA Double Pack with AoS more, has anyone seen it around? --- "All opinions are not equal. I saw it about a year ago... or maybe it was a few months ago. Whatever, I've seen it. In Sears, not that I would recommend hunting for rare video games there. That says it all, I think. The Wii is the successor to the DS, not the GameCube. Wow, yeah, somehow it never clicked that Nintendo's Japanese domination has actually only been going on for about a year and a half, so they actually do have a struggle over there with the Wii. You have a point - Nintendo has lost the hardcore gamer in Japan. Any future Zeldas (and Metroids, but that's nothing new) will either be tailored to the foreign hardcore fan or will be watered down - let's hope they stick with the former. Has anyone actually seen a PS3? I keep hearing stories about them sitting on store shelves, but I'm having a hard time believing it. So, apparently supply and demand are much more in line than the eBayers who lined up at launch led us to believe. Yeah, the most obvious indication of that is checking eBay. Right now, of course, demand's just gone down a lot because it's officially way too late for Christmas shopping online, but even up to two weeks ago you could find PS3s on eBay going for barely above the retail price, if there was even a markup at all. There are scattered accounts of them being visible in stores - I remember someone on a different site's forum claimed to work for Toys R Us and said it took them three hours to sell the first PS3 on the morning they got a new shipment - but I don't think that's the case all across the country. Basically, the systems probably are still selling out, but there doesn't seem to be any further demand; now that Christmas is over and shipments will (presumably) increase, we should see them on the shelves a lot more often. You got Viva instead of XBL??? No, it was on sale for $30. But if I had the option, considering how great this game is, yes, I would have gotten it over XBL. Maybe. >_< I'll be getting XBL sometime early next year though... but I've bought seven (eight if you count Sneak King) games for this console in a little over two months, which is a lot more than I would usually go for, so I figure I should tone it down a little bit. --- XBL Gamertag: XCTarantula | Games: Test Drive Unlimited, Saints Row, Table Tennis Currently Playing - Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Viva Piñata, Gears of War |

OSU! TATAKAE! OUENDAN! I got this on my birthday along with Jump! Ultimate Stars, but I've been saving it for now. Whoa. Very awesome game. Not sure if I like the songs better than EBA's, but Ready Steady Go>>>most of EBA. Hard Mode is seriously kicking my booty, too. I don't remember EBA being so hard. ._. LOL at the "What's a Gamecube" story; I was going to post that myself. But here's something better from 4cr: "WII ROX" spelled out in PS3s. http://www.4colorrebellion.com/media/pics/06/12/Sony_PlayStation_3QM4-detailw.jpg --- "You know you're in trouble when you get beat by something called a Wii." --TIME on the PS3 www.platypuscomix.net |

I never beat Ready Steady Go Insane until AFTER playing Elite Beat Agents, at which point it probably didn't take me more than ten tries for some reason. I must have tried dozens of times months earlier, but I gave up at some point. Playing Yoshi's Island (DS) all over again feels kind of refreshing. I wouldn't mind seeing the same (sequel with the same engine and appearance) thing done with Super Mario World, in fact, although on the other hand I hardly want my favourite platformer ever tarnished. Certainly, I wouldn't want Artoon doing it, although their level design is pretty good. So far I think the dual screen mechanic was a lot more worthwhile in Sonic Rush, but that has the potential to change very easily. YIDS is a slower-paced game where you have a lot more time to check out both screens, instead of being too focused on what's on one of them because of the high speed. It wasn't until later in the game when I really found myself appreciating that second screen, and I'm looking forward to seeing what YIDS does with the idea. YIDS also has, like, 50 levels, not 14. --- "All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others." - Douglas Adams |
