I bought Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja and Final Fantasy XII Collectors Edition today.

Izuna is ****ing hard. It isn't really frustrating though, maybe it's because I went in expecting an extremely hard game though.

Is it just me, or does this game sound exactly like Chronos Twin? Only it looks like it has a much younger target audience, so it's probably easier. And it's made by an Australian developer! That said, I hardly trust the Australian ideas of what makes a good game, based on the way most people here think about games. Nobody here has a damn clue what goes into a platformer as innovative and deep as, say, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (which gets no appreciation anywhere anyway, but less still in a place where the GameCube failed horribly), and I wouldn't expect a new developer in a place like this to really grasp the same level of fun and intricate design, almost-unique idea or not. It could be more or less polished than the average American game, but in the very least I would expect weaker presentation, and less creativity and depth (a concept often missed by Western developers), than from a Japanese game.

BG&E is good but nowhere near as good as people act like it is. I own the game and it was worth the $10 I spent on it but I probably would have felt slightly cheated if had paid very much more.

Some interesting stuff happened today over at Kotaku:

* Brian Crecente got wind of a rumor about a "PlayStation Home" from unnamed sources and decided to ask Sony about its veracity before posting, expecting the standard no-comment.
* Sony asked Crecente not to put the story up at the risk of damaging the relationship between Kotaku and Sony.
* Not being one to let a company tell him what news he can and can't post (since he didn't get the info from Sony in the first place), Crecente posted the story.
* Sony got pissed and ended relations with Kotaku, dis-inviting them to all future interviews and to the GDC media event a week from today.
* Huge internets backlash and PR problem.
* Sony apologized, re-invited Kotaku to everything, and let the story stay up.

Supposedly, Sony may finally have resolved their crap with Immersion, and could add rumble to the PS3. If they do, that would not only make them complete hypocrites, but prove that everything they ever said about why rumble wasn't in it and why rumble was unnecessary was pure bull****. Which we already knew.

And there's a ripoff of Miis and Achievements. Yay.

Sony's thing with Kotaku just shows how completely clueless they are about the industry and the media, too. It's not ****ing Kotaku's responsibility to not post rumours because Sony doesn't want to hear them. Instead, Sony practically confirm the rumour through what they did to Kotaku. If someone else broke an NDA, that's not Kotaku's fault, and they shouldn't be expected to withhold information because a company doesn't want people to know things. Blackmailing and threatening the gaming media is a really good way to do that, isn't it? And then they tried to fix it when they realised how bad it made them look, which is not something Sony normally do when they make a stupid mistake.

What did Kotaku do wrong? In contacting Sony for comment on the initial story, Crecente was informed that publishing the report could harm the business relationship between the two entities. Unresponsive to thinly-veiled threats, Crecente published the story, citing concern with informing readers and not with maintaining a corporation's announcement schedule. In an e-mail to Crecente, David Karakker, senior director of Sony's corporate communications, stated that, "I am very disappointed that after trying to work with you as closely as possible and provide you and your team with access and information, you chose to report on this rumor.... I can't defend outlets that can't work cooperatively with us."

This doesn't appear to be an issue of cooperation at all. It's an issue of control. A major corporation is lashing out at a news platform where it is unable to pull all the strings and directly exert influence. In the ideal world of public relations, journalists would regurgitate press releases verbatim with nary a thought spared to truth or timing. All this comes just a week before GDC and Sony's promised meeting with bloggers -- the opening of a dialogue between "us" and "them."

By doing our job and informing readers, have we become the enemy?

I think Kotaku handled the situation just as poorly as Sony did. The guy could have posted the report as rumor and then waited for Sony to ask them to pull it off. Instead, he asked Sony, knew that they didn't like it, and posted it anyway. It was basically a "**** you" right to their damn faces. That's not a two-way street. That's an "I don't like your answer so to hell with you guys." Sony doesn't need to give them access to material that should only be available to real reporters. Either way, Sony at least admitted their part of the problem.

I actually thought Sony's request came when Kotaku was searching for verification of the rumour, not asking for permission to put it up. It's their own right to put up all news and rumours they aren't legally bound to withhold, they're supposed to be journalists. Does this happen in other news industries, too?

I don't know much about Izuna except that it's a crazy ****ing hard Mysterious Dungeon game with, as you would expect, an awesome localisation. The fact that you lose all your money and items every time you die, and that you will die many, many times, kind of makes me less interested. You won't build up an arsenal of equipment and money to buy with. Everything is expensive, and you won't keep any of it because you're going to die.

Pixel, the Cave Story creator, has released a preliminary version of his next game. It's a shooter called Guxt:

It's a little disappointing; while I wouldn't expect something comparable to Cave Story, Pixel doesn't offer this genre much beyond his very nice artwork and music. It's not your typical bullet hell, but a little more retro in flavor, and with that comes a number of problems like difficult recovery after death and cheap shots (luckily the ship's large hitbox is taken into account well). Moreover there isn't an interesting mechanic or scoring system (you just shoot and occasionally get new weapons). Its levels do feel smarter and more substantial than your typical NES Zanac game, however.

I can get to level 5 (apparently the last one).

This is why you shouldn't make assumptions, after the first dungeon a bank and storehouse open up thus allowing you to store all of your weapons/armor and money.

So you can store your weapons/armor, assuming you don't die every time you've accumulated money before getting back to store it, and are hence able to buy weapons/armor. Then you have weapons/armor in storage, but you won't actually use them because you'll lose them as soon as you do. That's even better!

I didn't make any assumptions, I reiterated what I read in a review. Give it a rest.

I can't see why "lose all your money and items when you die" is a problem at all -- unless there's something you keep when you die and restart, you might as well just load your saved game when you die, which is what most other games make you do anyway.

You keep your experience and levels. So the game is mostly grinding.

I'm not entirely sure if you can load your saved game, because I remember hearing that turning the system off makes it just count as a death for you, so there's no point. It would probably autosave, then.

I've been playing through Lunar Knights; while the stealth aspect is severely reduced and there's nothing in the way of puzzles, it's still quite a good game. But Impy, the stealth isn't gone: it's still to your advantage to not get noticed by enemies, and you'll still take a pounding if you try to charge head-first into every encounter. It's just that you're not going to have large areas that force you to avoid detection by all enemies.

I think you're just playing it wrong. I've been incorporating some modicum of stealth into my gameplay, and it's been helping me out just fine. Just because you're not forced to use stealth doesn't mean there's no element of stealth in the game. There's not much, but it's there.

There's about as much stealth as in a Zelda game. I'm playing it "wrong"? It's an action game in which there's no downside to being seen by enemies. So if I pretend it's what I want it to be, it will suddenly become something else? Therefore I'm playing it wrong?

If you've actually played Boktai, and read/been told a reasonable amount about the stealth in Lunar Knights from people who have played the game, you would be fully entitled to do so.

I was complaining about the lack of stealth before I played LK and my complaints were exactly the same and exactly as valid after I played it. In neither case, however, did I say Lunar Knights was anything less than a great game, as taking issue or expressing disappointment with a specific aspect of the game is not, in fact, the same as trolling it and posting solely to attack it. Although it's a shame that it's lacking length compared to its predecessors, as like with some other recent games, that's a complaint of people who have actually played the game which I am therefore allowed to be disappointed in.

Haha, yeah, keep telling yourself that. That's a very good way to die in Lunar Knights -- I can tell you that from first-hand experience.

Yeah, it does seem to be quite a bit shorter. I'm just entering dungeon number eight right now (depending on how you count it), and the game seems to be winding down, though I do get the impression that there might be quite a few new post-game areas. Still, it's kind of disappointing that the game doesn't seem to have a lot of main-storyline content. Also, though it might be a small point, I find the space shooter areas to be a poor replacement for the coffin-dragging sections from Boktai 1.

But Lunar Knights has missions that have you replay levels with new objectives. Hm.

I haven't done any of the missions, so I can't comment. Though it annoys me that you're trying to start something in this topic, Impy. If you have beef with SatSR's mission structure, bring it up in that topic. If you have a problem with the missions in this game, comment on it directly. But really, don't make these snide remarks -- these are the kinds of things that start fights, Impy, since I'm no longer sure whether you actually know that.

It's pretty clear from the get-go that WMD isn't the work of the usual Wario crew (who is presumably far too busy coming up with new WarioWare concepts to revisit their mundane platformer roots). Gone is the Wario Land series' graphical finesse, its quirky sound design, its gorgeous music, and its unconventional gameplay. Oh, and its ability to get right to the action -- WMD is bloated with story. And not good story, either. A trite, uninteresting story full of fart jokes. And don't even ask about the lame nods to WarioWare that come in the form of constant minigames. And not good minigames, either. Trite, repetitive minigames designed for preschoolers.

I think what Mr. Parish is trying to say is that the game is trite!

Most disappointing of all is what WMD represents in the grand scheme of things. For a while, the DS represented a rebirth of forgotten genres and gameplay formats that had seen their heyday in the 8- and 16-bit eras, a welcome return to the styles with which Nintendo made its fortunes. But now the company seems to be handing out its properties to any ol' third-party developer and skipping the quality-control process, resulting in substandard hackwork like this and Artoon's Yoshi's Island DS. You'd think a company whose fortunes hang largely on its reputation would be more reluctant to squander its precious properties.

Then again, poorly made platformers were a big part of the 8- and 16-bit eras, too, so maybe things are just coming full circle. Fortunately, most of us still remember how not to spend our money on crap like this.


*sigh* When is Wario Land 5 getting here? Never, you say? Oh, of course, Nintendo outsource every handheld game that isn't a brain trainer now. It takes the greatest game developing minds in the world to make More Brain Training Again and Again for People Aged 22-26, so it's understandable that they'd hand products requiring a little less finesse over to horrible developers.

Dotstream and Soundvoyager finally arrived today, and I must say, the packaging is awesome. I didn't realise how small the boxes were, only having seen pictures without any scale. They're also slightly 3D with the simple lines on the box, and have some shiny parts with pretty light tricks. It's really awesome. The cartridges are shiny silver and black, too.

I guess the best one I'm missing is Orbital. I know it's good, but I've also already played it far too much. >_< I was most of the way through, and honestly I was finding it more frustrating as it got harder. I would probably have been a lot more frustrated without save states, because it's often very hard to be as precise as the game actually demands you to be. It's still a really clever game, but the controls are far too restrictive and hard to manage at times.

...But now I just want the box for that, too.

Wow, Soundvoyager is really good. Although the sound catcher game ALSO seems to require more precision than is sometimes possible. I seem to be playing that game constantly, actually. >_< It also seems to be the hardest because of that precision. And also because by the end, you basically have to pick out one little sound out of one speaker underneath five or so other sounds you've already triggered, and touch the invisible circle that's creating that sound. Which adds it to the sounds being played, making things even harder. I don't see how you can play this without headphones. Definitely not on a GBA SP at all.

Sound catcher is by far the most common game, which is kind of annoying, because I think there are just a few other kinds that are spread in between, and only about three of each of those. I don't expect it to get too repetitive, but it may feel like there were more kinds of games they could have done instead of repeating just that one. Hopefully it'll feel like enough. There's a reasonable amount worth doing here anyway, with all the branching paths.

I can't believe there's a game called sound cock. I think it involves chickens.

Dotstream is pretty interesting for a racing game, since you can't actually go as fast as anyone else initially. You have to use the slipstreams of other dots, forcing you to keep close to them... And once you're ahead of the pack, you can't accelerate anymore - except with speed boosts, of which you get two. You can actually get more than that from a pit stop between the two laps, but it's a waste of time to do so.
I'd only ever played the first cup before, and after that the tracks get much more... annoying. Or maybe I just suck. I'm hoping I can get more into it, otherwise Orbital might have been better.

The Play-Asia sale is over now, sadly. But Dotstream and Soundvoyager are still discounted for some reason (Orbital isn't, so I made a bad choice for one to have the potential to get later).

Each of the side games in SoundVoyager have three levels each, and while they can be fun, I much prefered the Sound Catcher levels. It's not really a game you'll sit down to play for a couple hours like Zelda or Final Fantasy #, but it's great for just before you go to bed or while waiting for a bus/appointment or to waste time in a peaceful and awesome way. Especially since you can play the game without even looking at the screen. Just stick the system in your pocket, get your fingers on L and R, and you're set. Of course, headphones are a must.

There are three unlockables too. One is kinda dumb, the other is credits, and the third is awesome. The dumb one comes from beating either all or just the last (can't quite remember) Sound Catcher levels, and the last two come from beating everything. Which is well worth the effort, as there's not all that much there (enough, but little compared to pretty well any other game), and it's a great mode to play in. I won't say what it, or othe other dumb one, is, unless you want to be spoiled and know what you're working towards.

I've gotten so utterly absorbed into Soundvoyager now. At first I thought I would stick to playing with my eyes open, because there are some slight visual cues telling you when you're near a circle. But I'm beginning to find that, with the combination of headphones, it becomes so much easier to play with my eyes closed. Issues of precision in touching the sounds are no longer a problem - I can center the sound, literally in my head, once I close off my other senses. It just becomes so amazing. I really just do this in sound catcher and sound slalom.

I like some of the other games, but in three levels of each game, the first of which is usually a waste of time you can do without sound at all, I don't think they really get to develop as well as sound catcher does. I don't really like sound cock, for example. It goes from stupidly easy, to reasonable but with only one chicken, to suddenly far too hard to do precisely and with three chickens in a huge space.

Yano indicated that the sequel would present tweaked designs of the three familiar Ouendan characters. Yano couldn't provide details, but the big news is that the beloved Ouendan threesome will face a rival team of Ouendan cheerleaders. Yano then revealed conceptual art for the opposition, and would only go so far as to name them "Sai Yon Ji." He then promisimed "some features for hardcore" fans of the series, but did not elaborate.

During the Q&A session, Yano was very evasive when a querent asked whether Inis had considered bringing the Ouendan franchise to another console. "Yeah, we'd consider it," Yano laughed. But when another querent specifically addressed the Wii, Yano became a bit more forthcoming: "We're in talks with Nintendo -- hopefully, we'll have something to talk about soon."


Oh God, this game is going to be awesome. I'm hoping EBA2 comes next, although by that point the series might feel milked. Maybe EBA2 should have come before Ouendan 2.

When pressed about the new Ouendan rival team, Yano had difficulty answering. He divulged that players would not be playing as the rival team, but during his response he visibly hesitated, then said, "I can't really talk about this." Ouendan 2 is my most wanted game at the moment. Even more than Super Paper Mario, which really says something. Why do all of these completely awesome games have to come out this year? My wallet will be killed, turned into a zombie, and then eradicated from the earth.

Not that I mind too much, though. :p

Anyways, I think EBA2 is coming soon, possibly even this year, judging by one of his comments from that 1Up blog. Really, I don't think I'd get too burnt out on this series, because it manages to stay fresh and fun. The rival squad idea looks cool, though I'm hoping there's some more gameplay elements added to the mix.

Also, there are some better scans out there, and the first two songs have been revealed, but I'm kind of tired right now. I'll post 'em in the morning or something.

Also, I doubt I'm alone in that I have a desire for physical space when playing a game. I need to actually know where I am, although Soundvoyager gives you no reference points. That's probably the hardest thing to overcome when you start playing with your eyes closed. Sound catcher doesn't NEED any physical space at all, but you're conscious of it nevertheless.

In the games with edges, static becomes louder on the side that the edge or border is closest to. For example, in Sound Chaser (I think... the one that's on a road with five lanes), when you're in the right most lane, you'll hear noticable static on your right side. Same with your left. In Sound Cock, the same applies if you're getting near the edges of the area.

It's kind of hard to play Sound Cock and Sound Picker with your eyes closed, though. Hell, it's hard enough to play them at all, because sound is one dimensional but your movements are two dimensional. You have no ****ing way of telling where the sounds are, because they could be anywhere in a 180 degree range at any distance in those directions.

"Waiting for the Miyamoto keynote to start, I’m sitting three rows from the front. Close enough to see Nintendo’s resident BMOC, Reggie Fils-Aime at the front of the crowd, working it with his trademark smile and good will. He poses for pictures, he signs Wiimotes, he presses the flesh with a goodnatured ease that would make even the most seasoned politician weep with envy.

“Kick his ass and take his name!” someone shouted from a few rows behind me.

“Who?” answered Reggie in mid-autograph.

“Phil Harrison, front row!” Sure enough, there was Phil Harrison, seated dead center, front row. Looks like he could show up on time for Nintendo’s keynote, but not Sony’s.

With a grin and a chuckle, Reggie replies, “Some would say we’ve already done that.”

Touchdown. The crowd goes wild".

Damn, just came here to post that. Yeah, that's hilarious. I love the comment about Harrison being on time to Reggie's keynote but not his own, too. It's here, for the record:

It's not Nintendo's fault their Keynote had to suck, but still a bit disappointing. And I wish they would be a bit more balanced between their non-gamer stuff and appealing to the hardcore. Their "hardcore" DS games are the ones they're outsourcing so we get crap like Wario, and games that could have been amazing, instead of just good, like Yoshi's Island DS and Star Fox Command.

Zenryoku Shonen was on the Band Brothers expansion... Not surprising, I'm guessing all the shared licensing Nintendo do between the music games they publish saves them money. God, I hope so much that Tentai Kansoku makes it on there, too, that would be way better than just Zenryoku Shonen. That's one of my favourite songs on the expansion and it would really be perfect for Ouendan. A couple of other BB/expansion songs would probably work extremely well, too.
