Fzero GC track announced in Famistu published on the Plaentgamecube.com site.

Mute City – It is the biggest city (population of one billion people) in the Space Nations. New circuits have been built since the old ones have worn down. The track introduced for Mute City is the Twist Road.

Port Town – Known as the space port that gave birth to many millionaires. The port is built around a gigantic shaft with the latest technology and equipment. Two tracks are introduced: Aerial Dive and Long Pipe.

Green Plant – The Space Immigration Offices built the Green Plant to produce carbon dioxide. The track introduced is Intersection, which features curving pipes.

Lightning – Due to pollution in the ozone layer, unpredictable weather becomes a big problem in the 26th century. This area is covered by thick thunder clouds. Energy companies from each planet made big investments in energy facilities in this area. It is said that 10 million kilowatts are generated altogether. The introduced track is Half Pipe.

Aeropolis – The skyscraper city houses the artificial brain – Mother Q, which holds all the information of the inhabitants. The track introduced is Multiplex.

In other news.. I did a straight swap of Metroid Prime for Super Monkey Ball 2(SMB2). for those of you who have the luxery of having a NTSC Gamecube they'll have had SMB2 for more than a good while now, if you wanted it that is. WEll to me Metroid Prime was an excellent game and the graphics were amazing as well as the gameplay itself but I am a multiplayer freak I have to play fresh new exciting multiplayer experience and SMB2 is offering just what I wanted, it offers all that my first experiences of SMB were and more. I've only had it a couple of hours now, but I've played all of the new takes on the old games and i've only just unlocked Monkey dogfight, I must say I am VERY VERY dissapointed Monkey Soccer isn't a 4 player(at least it says it isn't in the manual).

Impressions: All the new course for Race are great. Monkey DogFight needs a barrel roll, The new challenge course are quite lush and new some have a little bit of familiarality about them. The 4 palyer billiars match is great some thig SMB missed. and so on...

The port is built around a gigantic shaft

Mine of course.

Anyways, the new NP has some times for MP. The best is 3:58, which actually beat Alan's time of 4:14. Alan is the dude that wrote the MP players guide. The next two fastest are 5:03 and 5:33.

Those are just from NP though. Some people on the MP board might've done it faster.

Unlocked all 6 of the new games on Super Monkey Ball 2. I must say I like Tennis the most it is a perfect emulation of Mario Tennis, one of my favourite N64 games the only one that is as good as any of the GC titles I play.
I do like the subtle changes they've made the the games like the removing of the big glove upgrade on monkey fight 2 is one them and the ability to alternate items in Monkey Race 2. My favorite upgrade isn't Monkey Target 2 though that is pretty cool with its Monkey Formation and Monkey Golf which is just too long to be accomidated in to my games I play (though i have played it with 3 other firends we only got to the third hole we felt it was going to take to long). It is Monkey Billiards 2, we were massive fans of the original and with its 4 new games it certainly more playable. Understandly Jap-9 ball is the only 4 player option though its quirky more than quite good. Rotation is the fave at the mo, though when i play with my dad 8 Ball(basically Pool) and US-9 Ball will the new favourites.

F-Zero tracks:
these seem pretty cool, and it seems we'll get a mix of new and old again. I've always felt the intergalactic feel, locations, and characters added so much to the F-Zero feel. In my mind, the F-Zero world is perhaps the central, most intertwined Nintendo world of them all. Not Hyrule, not the mushroom kingdom. This far off, futuristic region...we've got Zoda and James McCloud participating, this robot guy built by EAD, some badass bounty hunters, a dinosaur, a scientist. It's great.

Looks like they're keeping the same idea as F-Zero too, how they name individual tracks after their design.
Port Town – Known as the space port that gave birth to many millionaires.
Including Captain Falcon! He was born there- not sure if we found that out in F-Zero X or the original F-Zero though.

I've played all of the new takes on the old games and i've only just unlocked Monkey dogfight, I must say I am VERY VERY dissapointed Monkey Soccer isn't a 4 player(at least it says it isn't in the manual).

And it was in the original?

Anyway, Super Monkey Ball 2 does sound pretty good, though unfortunately it's not always convenient for me to play multiplayer games or have friends come over...I'd get this over something like Mario Party though. I guess I would have picked it up last fall, if it wasn't for SMS.

Anyways, the new NP has some times for MP. The best is 3:58, which actually beat Alan's time of 4:14. Alan is the dude that wrote the MP players guide. The next two fastest are 5:03 and 5:33.

3:58 is pretty darn fast (and there's probably faster now, I'm sure). I beat the game in roughly 5 hours, with 60-something percent. So yeah, I could have been more efficient, and I made a couple stupid blunders (like the artifact after the Hydra lab I 'unlocked' but then forgot to grab it and had to go all the way back later!
Plus I haven't even gotten 100% in any file yet, and don't know where all the items are. But I see where a time like that is possible...though subtract about 15-20 minutes off that to see the true time before the end-game...the final couple battles take at least that long.

============================

The first Capcom "exculsive GC" title PN03 has been released now in Japan of course, and it seemed to be getting some pretty negative feedback. So I kind of laughed about it, thinking it served these sites right, for hyping up this "cookie cutter" third person action game with a female lead. HOWEVER, now it seems the game actually is quite unique and not what I first expected...going back in philosophy and design to 2D shooters. Most big reviews/impressions so far seem to really gloss over this, or not even realize that just maybe this was the way the game was supposed to be! This review, however, seems to get things right:

http://www.ntsc-uk.com/MainContent/Gamecube/PN03/PN03.htm

I don't know if the game is any good or not yet, of course, but hey- at least it isn't some boring, cliche and expected game. It's funny though, these sites seem to be disliking the game not because of what it is, but because of what it *isn't*. Bwahahaah. No voice acting? GOOD FOR IT. Probably suits this style and form of gameplay quite well without it...

Still, shooting in 3D (even if some of it largely feels like it's in a 2D plane) just doesn't seem as appealing as in true 2D- it seems like it would get more repetitive and boring this way, especially since you have to stop moving to shoot. But i'm still glad this game isn't focusing on being long and boring and mainstream, but rather a short, very replayable and streamlined experience, with a focus on learning the system and doing better each time. that at least, gets points in my book of gaming! I'll probably rent it once it arrives this fall.

Yesterday I played Monkey Shot it reminds me so much of Point Blank.
In other news Pokémon Gold & Silver has come back into play again today. I've decided to hide out what everyone in the game has to say. So far i've worked on all the Pokémon Centers in Kanto & Johto. My next target is a Pokémon Fisherman, Perry, apparently he helps you find Marril in Mt. Mortar, Marril being the fabled Pikablu before people knew what they were talking about. Marrils just a collectors item as it(even though being a water type) couldn't fight its way out of a paper bag. Today i also caught a Legendary bird, Ho-oh.

Seeing as your opinion is always a good one, I'd like to know which game you think I should
tackle first. Or really, which of the following Zelda games is better: Link's Awakening, Oracle
of Ages, Oracle of Seasons. I haven't tried any of the GameBoy Zelda games, and I would
very much like to. I don't know where to start, and the only experience I ever had with them
was Tail Cave in LA. I must say, I was insanely disappointed with that. Even for a first
dungeon it was horrible. If it gets better than this, however, I would of course continue.

So, what's your verdict?

<<< this is scientist

I haven't played the Oracle games fully. Though from what I did play, they felt uninspired and fan-made. Link's Awakening though, I consider nearly on the same level as LttP, and is probably the second best designed Zelda game. (I have not played WW...yet). The progression, narrative, and characters I found just very convincing and enjoyable. It had some of the "strangest and most memorable" Zelda moments to me. The only thing I think it doesn't really have on LttP is the world layout and transition between worlds. Plus, LA is for a handheld, and is THIS good. It's the best handheld game I've ever played possibly...and how often you say one of the best games in a series is a handheld incarnation? Zelda is the only series I can say this about, I think...

Of course, you said you were disappointed with the first dungeon, and for some reason I know you didn't like LttP that much. So why bother? Well, if you are going to play one, I'd definitely suggest it over Flagship's Oracle games.

A lot of people don't seem to see the magic I do in LA though...I'm not quite sure why...most seem to sure see it in LttP.

Also (Mars would want me to say this)...the dungeons each had different music, something new for the series at the time. Though I honestly was never bothered by LttP only having 2 dungeon tracks, because they were so intoxicatingly good.

LA, plain and simple, was the greatest handheld ever made, being better than Ghost Babel, the GBC Metal Gear game.

LA had a decent story, mixed with damn fine graphics (for the time,) good level design, kick ass items, amaingly excellent flow and, something all Zelda games MUST have from now on, superb music. Switching items every two seconds can be annoying, I'll say that, but it never becomes TOO annoying. Plus you get to jump, how great is that?

The Oracle games were horrible, and tried to take a more cinematic approach, something no Zelda game should do. Not even WW, with it's good story, tried to take that approach. While this is not the worst thing about the two games, it is certainly an annoyance.

The absolute worst thing about the Oracle games are their horrid dungeon design, and the fact that they got by on OoT fanboys alone. Do you think it would have been so big if all the little fanboys didn't see their sweet Guru-Guru in it? Of course not. While the similar characters were put their so that the story could "link" to OoT's (OMG OMG OMG i mad a joek) it was the factor that, as scientist said, made the games feel fan-made. I spit on you, Capcom. You have disgraced the once great name of Zelda. Then again, MM did a fine job of that as well, but that's another story.

Hey TimeNull! I've said this before, but the Oracle games and LTTP are virtually the same, and the only reason so many people knock on the Capcom ones is because they're by CAPCOM, which is a fanboy reason.

Anyway, I wanted to talk to you tonight, Sci, but Alissa said you were off somewhere else. Funny, I never heard anything about that from you. But anyway, it's too bad, since something happened today that you've wanted to hear for a long time now: Nintendo announced the release of a demo disk this May. This one will probably be free though, like the DVD from last November, and not just in issues of NP, so you don't have to hurry and resubscribe....

Now we just have to hope the games in there are good. If it's full of Army Men/Nickelodeon stuff I'll scream. If it's got one or two levels from Sonic Adventure...well, then, sweet! That would make the whole thing worth picking up.

I recently did a review on Link's Awakening, Check my contributors page to read it.
I played the Oracle games and they were quite good they had some very good ideas with the time/Season shift items. other than that it is virtually te same as Link's Awakening control wise. The bosses seemed very already done, when you follow Lttp and LA most idea have already been taken.
The rideable animals weren't that bad but they didn't seem to shine too well. A set of adventures which are just not as good as LA but still good in there own right. Oh and if you were dissapointed with LAs first dungeon you'll be really dissapointed with Ages first dungeon will appaul you.

I prefer LA over almost any Zelda game it was my first that got me into the series and I enjoy time and time again. the reasons are simple its a pick up and play Zelda at the time I used my Super Gameboy to save battery power when I was at home but this adventure is very complete for a a Pocket Title. It has some great tune that are well composed such as the hidden Samba beat(Check www.VGmusic.com) and the Mumbo's Mamba is also one of my absolute favorites. It has the perfect Handheld 2d settings, The beach, The Mountains, The Villages etc. I just wished the early Pokémon games looked more like this.

In conclusion Link's Awakening all the way for a polished adventure you won't be dissapointed with. I have the original but DX might be good with its tunic changing stuff.

Possible Spoilers Yadda Yadda Yadda

.

.

Well, although I haven't completely completed Wind Waker, I do have enough to form a good opinion on it. I'm at the point where I can go to face the final boss, so I'm fairly certain I've got enough. First off, let me say that WW is a fairly good game, and definitely worth playing through. As long as we get that straight, know that the rest of this post is "pro-Wind-Waker". I think that the graphics were great, the story was fair, and the gameplay was well above par. My main beef (besides the difficulty level) are the dungeons.

When Ocarina of Time was released for N64, dungeon design was taken to a new level, as expected. Although, when reflected, not on the same level as Link to the Past, but adding the third dimension and implementing it for the puzzles, bosses and the sort was done fairly well. When Majora's Mask was released, it was taken to an incredible new level. Majora's Mask had dungeons that made you salivate on your controller. The beginning dungeon was the best of its kind, and Stone Tower is probably the greatest designed Zelda dungeon we'll ever see. So, I guess in conclusion we can say that less dungeons = great dungeons. And, seeing as Wind Waker only has about 6 real dungeons, you'd expect them to be somewhere between Majora and Ocarina.

You'd be wrong. Let me say that WW did not have good dungeons, in my opinion at least. After playing through MM and LttP again, I realized how much I hated the OoT dungeons. Dodongo, Jabu Jabu, Fire, Water, Spirit, and most of Shadow were awful to me. I basically only play the game for Deku Tree and the Forest Temple. Wind Waker has less than this for me. The first dungeon (not Forsaken Fortress) was rather horrible. The atmosphere was just plain hot, the puzzles were at a joke level in difficulty, and it didn't even match up to the horrible Fire Temple. The second dungeon did better at this, but most of the puzzles were still easy and the atmosphere was all wrong. Isn't this supposed to feel alive? This is supposed to be the living dungeon, and the only things moving were vines and jellies. Still, I think this is the best dungeon in all of Wind Waker. The Tower of the Gods was incredibly tedious at first. Cruising in your boat for the first half of the temple was a pain in the neck, and in you really look at it, the temple would have been a lot shorter if you could sail. The basic outline of the first room gives you directions, and is far too linear. As you enter you see how the architecture is gearing you to head right, and when you're done there they gear you left. Then they gear you upstairs, where they light up which doors you're supposed to go through in the right order. Where's the challenge in this? I remember getting lost in LttP some times, and having to recall which rooms piece together in what way. This wasn't even a dungeon, it was just a bunch of rooms in a specific order with individual puzzles that only take place in those rooms. And then when you do reach a crossroad where you can pick a direction, the one you pick always leads to a tough, tedious puzzle that results in a Joy Pendant. I was really ticked off with that.

cont'd

Of course, Hyrule Castle was just big fight fest, and I doubt anyone was displeased with that.

The Earth and Wind Dungeons were also A-nnoying. Earth was the only dungeon in the game that really hit me with the mood. The drab, grey walls and ancient traps really make you feel like you're in a dungeon and not a funhouse. Plus, the redeads scared the crap out of me. But the constant use of the Command song to complete a dungeon where the item you get is only good for that dungeon makes me wonder how many times I can use the word tedious in one post. Also, too linear. We need another Skull Woods, or Blind's Hideout, or Great Bay! Not this crap. Luckily, I wasn't too displeased with Wind Temple, which I find is the only good temple in the game. Puzzles were interesting, the temple was the most difficult in the game, and the hookshot was useful outside of the dungeon. My only complaint is that it seemed too short, and the grappling hook seems to be obsolete after your retrieve the hookshot.

Now, I restate my disclaimer. Wind Waker is a good game, and worth playing. The gameplay is above par, the bosses are very good, and hey it's a Zelda title. But if you want good dungeons, pick up Majora's Mask or Link to the Past. I think the only thing making Wind Waker's gameplay good is outside of the dungeons.

Link's Awakening: I think Sapphire and Jman009 both gave some more good reasons as to why LA is a special game. Hopefully that can help Mac out in deciding what to play as well.

Mars: Did you mean to compare the Oracles to LA or LttP? You said LttP, but it sounds like you meant LA, considering the graphics styles and engine are so similar. As to LttP being similar to the Oracles, I really don't see that at all. LttP's world "transition" I think is much stronger, the atmosphere heavier, the story not so fan-made. The fact that the Oracles were made by a team at Capcom I don't think really shapes my opinion. Indeed, it explains why they perhaps took so much from other games in the series, but we have to remember, Miyamoto (and others at nintendo) DID assist in making these games. I think they main problem is they're mostly just more of the same...not really introducing any new ideas or concepts that really stick out or drastically alter the feel of the gameplay more than previous titles had. Still, I may try to go through them fully someday.

I told you Thursday night I might be gone this weekend...and I was. Anyway, the announcment of a demo disc is really great news. Sure, it may not be a GOOD demo disc, but at least it IS a demo disc. Well, maybe there's the chance still that it's only videos and nothing playable, but I hope not... If NP starts doing this regularily, and that's the only convenient way to get the discs, of course I'd resubscribe.

Mac: I won't read your review of WW yet...I JUST got the game today finally, and don't want to be spoiled or anything. I don't even know the structure of the game or what the dungeons are yet. All I know is that most people think the first half or so of the game ROCKS and the second half is just boring sailing on the sea, and they whined that there aren't more dungeons. I'll find out for myself in the coming weeks...

Good review, Mac. I'm not done with it either, but yeah, it hadn't really been difficult until the Wind Temple. I liked the Earth Temple more though. I dunno, the atmosphere in there was great.I liked controlling Medli more than controlling Makar. The boss in there was fun too. I guess this game isn't really meant to be challenging as much as it's meant to be fun, but boy is it fun! Anyway, I'll be interested to hear Sci's impressions.

THINGS I LIKE IN WIND WAKER (partial list)
===========================

-You can crawl around in first person. Anywhere. This adds a whole new angle to the game for me...like cutting the grass where that guy is cutting it near the start of the game...and then crawling around in first person in that freshly cut grass....the screw around feeling in this game is almost like mario sunshine. Well, as close as Zelda gets to that.

-Just cutting the grass period. And bushes. And big tree stalks. and they leave a little stump where you cut them, like LttP. Like a Zelda game should. None of these puny, origami-like OoT bushes here.

-The music. The theme of the first island has been stuck in my head for pretty much the whole day. In a good way. The tempo is perfect. And then after a while it adds the Kokiri forest theme to it. so far the remixes all seem tastefully done.

-Sword fighting is a lot better. The actual battles seem just as easy as OoT, but that's okay, because they still rock (at least right now). The notes that are added to the music when you fight are some of the best blending of music and what's happening on the screen I've seen. This seems better done than...Rez. Link's actual jumping to the side and backflips also are faster and cover more ground. Fighting feels fast and flexible, and not as stiff. More dynamic than ever.

-The emotions. I really feel what Link is feeling in this game, thanks to the incredible expressions. Link's large head and eyes are also brilliantly done, and help convey things very well. This Link is very impressive, and is probably my favorite in the series. Miles ahead of OoT's -in the words of Bender- "Robot Link".

-Plus, the other characters are all cool too, or have something at least distinctive about them. The developers made such an effort to make each character feel like an individual person, without rehashing characters (at least so far). A lot of Zelda games do this, but this one REALLY seems to do it. That kid with the snot hanging out of his nose...I always felt awkward around him, and just wanted to get away. He was annoying and I really felt it. Reminded me of staying away from annoying little kids in real life. Not all games can have this effect on you. The guy crouching down trying to catch a pig too, that was a real hoot. Bwahahahahaha! Look at his intent face as he tries to catch a pig. Tetra also really comes out as a distinctive character too, more than I thought.
-My favorite character so far besides Link is that awesome giant bird. Reminds me of the idea of a thunderbird from Zelda II.

-the text in this game is also good! Half the things Tetra has said so far make me just about burst open. And in Sturgeon's house when you read the papers on the wall that tell you how to play...that's hilarious too. I laughed at almost each one. "If one wishes not to have all memories lost, one must remember to keep track of one's life" or some round-about way to explain how to save your game. It's funny just to read, and it's nice they don't bog the game down with too much training, and just restrict a lot of it to only if you want to read those papers.

-Crawling around in the grass, looking up at Tetra and the pirates, and just jumping around and heading to get the shield...then getting sidetracked and gazing out into the sea...or flinging down some bait for a pig only to have a seagull fly up and steal it from you...it almost feels like it releases some of that "happy" feeling into my blood, and it's rare for me to feel that way about a game.
From: scientist pg | Posted: 4/15/2003 3:25:08 AM | Message Detail
So far this is the best 3D Zelda game. Drowns OoT under the water. Literally. Freedom, flexibility, fun, interaction, feelings, emotions, adventure, discovery...that's all here, and done a lot better than before.

My problems with the game aren't many so far (apparently later is when the problems start. I'm still skeptical I'll have many issues though. A lot of people are whining that there aren't as many dungeons as OoT. I say good for it, OoT had 1 or 2 too many for its own good. I've also heard the sailing gets tedious. Well, if I can fool around for over 2 hours at the start of the game without even having to go get my shield, I doubt I'll have a big issue with this later.) My guess is the main gripes I'll have with the game are simply that it isn't any harder than OoT/MM. But the fun is making up for that.

*spoilers for LA*

I can't remember who mentioned LoZ:LA DX (maybe it was Mars), but it is as good as the original. The hidden dungeon's song is a slightly remixed version of LoZ's first dungeon. THe tunics help a lot; the game is still somewhat hard even with doubled attack or defense. The photo thing is cool, even if you don't have a printer. It adds another thing to quest for and collect, without being annoying. The photos of Link and Marin in the well, or Link and Bow-wow... priceless.

The only problems I can think of is the last boss in the colour dungeon and playing it on a GBA. I've never figured out a sure-fire way to beat the boss, everytime you hit it and change it's colour, you bounce back and by the time you make it back to the boss, it's colour has returned to normal. With a GBA, the colours are drab and seem kinda dirty. You do get used to it, but it's a little disappointing.

As a little side point, you can actually boost your attack with the sword by 3x (red tunic, piece of power, and the lvl 2 sword).

PlanetGameCube had an article stating that the world record for fastest time to beat LttP has been broken...it can be done in under two hours, from the moment you press start at the title screen to when the last blow goes into Ganon. I looked at the breakdown of what the guy accomplished when, and he whips through a couple of the dungeons in less than five minutes. Is it even possible to walk through them that fast, regardless of obstacles and enemies? o_O

Yep, got Ikaruga in the mail today. I had played the DC version before a little bit- this version for gamecube is mostly the same, except for a couple new modes and no slowdown.

This is easily one of the best games I've ever played. The amount of depth is unparalleled for 2D shooters, and the polarity system of the game is implemented PERFECTLY. One button switches your craft between white and black colors. The other button fires your gun. All enemies are also either black or white, and all their shots are either black or white as well. You absorb shots that are the same color as you, and die if you touch the opposite color. Also, you inflict double damage if you hit an enemy while you're the opposite color. It's a very simple system, but it's used constantly throughout the game. You'll be changing color more than firing your gun, in several cases.

The review that matches my feelings for the game the closest is CMoon's (which is listed under the reviews for the Dreamcast version). I'd suggest reading that to find out more- it definitely hits the nail on the head. I'm sure you'd like this game if you want a challenging 2D shooter that's also very innovative. People have said the game is too short with only 5 levels but that's simply not true- if you play the game the way it's supposed to be played, there's months and months of practice and trying that would need to be put into the game for any sort of mastery. I played a portion of the first stage in practice mode over and over at least 25 times tonight and didn't get bored once.

Mac: O_O I downloaded this mp3 last night but forgot to listen to it afterwards, so posting that link reminded me of it, and I popped it up here and am listening to it right now. This one rules!! One of the best I've heard from there in a while...I've got it looping over and over and I'm not tired of it- the mood is great.

No I don't have it. I have a slow connection, but I also have patience, for something like that.

Is there a site I can download it from? Otherwise, I'd have to wait until we're on AIM at the same time (and the transfer might take too long). Email isn't an option, because hotmail won't let me store an attachment that big,

I <3 Ikaruga.

I just picked it up today (I've been out of town since Tuesday). While I've never been very good at "shooting" games (as GameFAQs calls them), I simply could not resist the allure of Ikaruga. My friend had imported the Japanese Dreamcast version, and he simply could not stop talking about it. It sounded so great, I went to pick it up as soon as I got back from my trip. I'm already happy with the $40 I spent. I made it through Easy Trial mode using only one continue, so I think I'm ready to have my butt handed to me in Normal mode. I'll give my impressions on the actual game tomorrow, but I already know I'll be saying something similar to "I <3^2 Ikaruga."
---
When in doubt, just use Cauchy's Inequality!
(<sum>(x_i^2))(<sum>(y_i^2)) >= (<sum>(x_i)(y_i))^2

Cauchys: Glad you enjoy Ikaruga. Yes, I'd recommend starting to play on Normal fairly soon, even if you find it difficult. Easy seems to be good to get a general grasp for a level, but enemies on Normal leave suicide bullets if you shoot them while the same color. This means you'll absorb more bullets, and have a homing meter that is filled more often than not. In some ways, this seems to make this mode almost easier than Easy difficulty, plus Normal was the mode that the chaining system was built around (though you can chain in Easy and Hard, but it's just more difficult to do so).

Mac: If it's in WIP then I'll go get it right now; I do have an account there.

GAME PROGRESS:
==============

Wind Waker- uhh, Dragon Roost Island yet. Good music here, and the tune for the Great Sea may just be my favorite music I've ever heard in the series. The boat won't let me leave and sail where I want yet- it seems they want me to tackle the first dungeon here, so that's what I'll do next. I just want to sail around and do nothing, in all honesty.

Ikaruga- Trying to get past the 3rd boss on Normal, using one continue. I finally found a good strategy, but part of it is still pretty risky. A general rule with this game is the more risks you take = a higher score. Of course, that can be applied to tons of games, but it's more obvious and cleverly implemented in Ikaruga.
I'm also getting close to nailing an A++ rank on the first level...I can do individual parts in conquest mode similar to the demonstration, but then it's difficult to string them all together at once in the main game, much less consistently.

Yeah, I intend to start Normal mode tomorrow: right now, it's too late, and the sound would wake other people up. And I can't play a game without the sound. :) Also, I have poor reflexes past 2:00 AM, and since I live on the East Coast, you can see that I wouldn't fare too well right now.

Questions:
1) What does my rank mean? Obviously, it's an indicator of how well I did on the level, but is it based on score, # enemies shot down, longest combo, ??? I got C rank on both of the first two stages, but I'd like to know how to improve that.

2) What exactly is the deal with Tate mode? I'd like to use it, but a warning in the instruction manual said something like, "Don't turn your normal television on it's side, or it will catch fire. Use a special vertical TV." What's with that? Is it really dangerous to flip my TV on its side? I'd like to use Tate mode, but not if it kills my TV.

3) Where does the name "Tate" come from? I can't find it anywhere in the manual. I take Japanese, and from what I can tell, it should be "Tatte": "standing upright."
