Well actually its more like an america voice. on the video at the very start of Prime in the US version you'll have music, in the European version(and possibly in the japanese version to) you have a guy telling the story of Samus.
That's interesting, and probably somewhat effective, if it's not overdone. And it actually sounds like it isn't. Still though, it doesn't seem very necessary either, and I might get annoyed by it during the game. I wonder if there is an option to turn it off.
Well, I also liked how in Quest you could move while fighting to dodge things. It was a good battle system, but not a well executed game.
What I didn't like was after the battle you couldn't always tell what direction you were facing, and ended up walking back the way you came often times!
My favorite game right now is Metroid Prime. It's the best game I've played since OoT and JFG.
Nice to see another Jet Force Gemini fan. It really is a fine game, though sadly it gets too long and dragged out. Rare's best work for the N64 IMO, not counting their FPS games. I think Super Mario Sunshine is definitely better than Prime though.
I won't waste any more of Sci's remaining 100 posts on this nonsense. Back to gaming.
Thanks, AV. Huh, only 100 left. Maybe this topic won't make it a whole year then. Though that's a good thing too.
Right. I heard somewhere that Nintendo actually has another Zelda game planned, this time following the mood of OoT and MM. Is this true, or have I heard wrong (most likely)?
They are probably making a sequel. I think the best bet would be to continue the WW style, at least for the present console, similar to how MM continued the OoT style on the N64. Of course, Aonuma said they didn't even know what direction they'd take on a sequel yet, and that was just recently. The magic box says otherwise, but that's...the magic box.
In the latest EGM, there's a tear-out coupon that says you can get an SP for 60 dollars if you trade in your GBA. If they had a good-looking color whose paint didn't chip, I'd consider it.
Wha? They're more than $60 otherwise? and the paint chips? and it's a step back to gameboy pocket comfort (at least it appears that way)?
I'd just stick with getting a GBA, and play under a light. Oh wait, there's hardly any games I want for GBA...
===========
In other news:
-I got SOTN in the mail today. I'm excited to complete this game, though it'll have to wait until I get the console.
-I've been told by two people I should check into Vagrant's Story for the psx. But it's an RPG. But I think it has real time fighting, or something, and is more like an adventure game. Any thoughts on this game from anyone?
-I'll hold off on getting any more psx games too soon, though next on the list is probably either R-Type Delta or MegaMan X4.
-Master Quest progress: I'm in Jabu Jabu's belly. Some cool changes, and the cows are great.
-Why aren't I further in Master Quest? Because I've been playing THIS, which owns all of you in a multitude of ways: http://www.geocities.com/watercrash/cave/guwange.jpg --- The Scientist knows best... "Someday sci, i'm going to say something witty and be in your sig" -Alissa |

-Zelda Wind Waker scores are trickling in. Seems the main two complaints are: A) too tedious, especially using the wind waker and watching the animation over and over. And B) too easy. Will these really be problems? Yeah, I think so. But we have to remember OoT and MM were plagued by these same ones! So it maybe doesn't improve them, but I doubt it's any worse! OoT is full of tedious tasks, unskippable text, and boring Ocarina animations. The world is also a chore to cross at times, and things can be boring to do. MM can also be a hassle going all over the place to get pieces of hearts and find minigames. WW seems much more lively, interactive, and dynamic overall, and will likely make up for one little wind waker animation. Crossing the sea just looks FUN too. More ingrained with the game than Epona perhaps, as well.
For difficulty, it's too bad it's so easy! but OoT and MM were cake too. You'd think Nintendo would REALIZE a LOT of people that play WW will have beaten those though (or at least OoT), and there should be NO EXCUSE for not making it more challenging for all of US. Gah.
Other than that, this looks to be the best thing for the Zelda series since LttP, and possibly one of the, if not the, greatest 3D adventure game of all time. This should do for Zelda what Sunshine did for Mario. Increase the feel of freedom and flexibility, and fun.

Sci, what game is that? In the pic...
As the file name says, Guwange.
I really hope you'll be making a second one.
Yeah. I'll have plenty to talk about, judging by all the games I'll be getting, which are listed in Mars' current topic.
Found this today; it was fun to read:
http://www.gamespy.com/top10/march03/genres/index.shtml
It lists the top 10 dying genres of videogames. While I wish a few of them would come back, certainly it's good riddance to some of those, like VR games, and the full motion video kind. I wish space shooters and beat-em-ups would make a comeback. Of course, beat-em-ups couldn't prove themselves for several years, so it isn't that surprising they died out, and a common favorite is STILLLLL River City Ransom! But if they could add some innovative elements (sort of like how that game did), that would be great. Doubt we'll see it though.
As for Puzzle games and Text adventures, they can definitely provide some entertainment. At least puzzle games can pass some time, and I at least USED to find text adventures somewhat humorous. At least things like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's true though- these games really don't need "next-gen" power to run, and most of them are just readily available for free on the net. Not that that's a bad thing though...they probably reach their intended audience better that way, anyway.

I've never seen anything quite like Metroid Prime, some how it has the trait of getting better and better and then getting better some more. The Beam seems to be more versitile than a swiss army knife, having just got the ice beam I'm like a little school girl running around freezing everything! But more interestingly the graphics are in its own league. Sure a lot games have there old moments where they shine and then stay consistant. Prime is one of those games that is constantly getting better and better. The versitlity of the worlds are really well "sown" together having spent the last few hours in phendara drifts its amazing how well it merges in to the next world where this be with trees or lifts even the signature graphics can be spotted when one world meets with the next. So far i've found the power beam to be as useful as the wave beam even though the latter is more impressive. Hears to the future of Prime currently i've taken the plunge in the submerged space wreckage which uses the Thermal imaging visior really well. --- Live zee dream! For then you are in the know. |

Hmm, I thought the worlds felt rather disjointed from each other. True, there's some graphics in the elevator rooms that show the transition, but for the most part, each world looks like that world, and not much like something else. I think Super Metroid's transitions are much more subtle and impressive, anyway. --- The Scientist knows best... "Someday sci, i'm going to say something witty and be in your sig" -Alissa |

From: scientist pg | Posted: 3/26/2003 1:07:59 AM | Message Detail |
That pirate place isn't considered one of the main dungeons, as far as I can tell. It sounds to me like it's the equilvalent of sneaking into hyrule castle in OoT. Mars said they were counting it as a real dungeon because you got the map or compass in it or something. But in OoT you get the map and compass in about 3 areas that nobody considers main dungeons.
The fire dungeon in WW has the exact same music as Dodongo's Cavern...
I heard they added a drum beat. Beyond that, I know very little about the game's music. I don't think there's anything really overly wrong with remixes, though I hope some of them do have a new unique spin. Most important though, is if the game can offer brand new themes. I'm particularily hoping for a new overworld theme slighly based on the classic Zelda theme, similar to how OoT did that. --- The Scientist knows best... Time for the complaints. the Power bomb for Samus's morph ball seems pathetic sure its flash bang and all that but there is a weird delay afterwards and then the bendizium blocknig the way seem to just dissapear. I didn't really like this, however things became good again for a while i got the grapple beam it looks cool, it plays well but in some places its really picky about the icon for the grapple some times i see it but yet i can not grapple. oh well other tan this i'm throughly enjoying the game. --- Live zee dream! For then you are in the know. |
From: scientist pg | Posted: 3/27/2003 2:41:58 PM | Message Detail |
Yes, you have to be close enough to the grapple icon, and on the same level, for it to allow you to actually connect with the icon.
My problem isn't only with some of the weak and scripted uses for the items, but how late they are found in the game. The grapple especially, I think could have been implemented better by placing it earlier on. Too many items you just suddenly get too late, and in the middle of the game there's somewhat of an "absense" of good items. Of course, getting 100% or doing a speed run could put a different perspective on this. --- The Scientist knows best... "Someday sci, i'm going to say something witty and be in your sig" -Alissa |

Never played Figher's Destiny. About the only N64 VS. fighter I played was KI Gold, like...in '96.
Downloaded some videos of Rez...it looks pretty interesting, though probably too repetitive. I might get it though, and most other people seem at least adequately pleased with the game. I've just never found rail shooters inherently as fun as 2D ones. Star Fox 64 was alright, and Orta for Xbox looks interesting (indeed, the 1st game I'd buy if I purchased the system). Sin and Punishment by Treasure and Nintendo (a collaboration from my two favorite developers...that I missed out on?) is considered by many the greatest rail shooter ever. Unfortunately, it's a pain to get the import (the only version there was), though it hasn't been sold at a very steep price when it is being sold. --- The Scientist knows best... Infogrames talks about porting Ikaruga... http://www.gamespy.com/interviews/march03/ikaruga/
Luckily, it seems they're doing their job:
GameSpy: Are there any differences between the U.S. and Japanese versions of Ikaruga? Michael Gjere: None. Except ... one's in English, one's not.
Sounds good; they aren't tampering with anything.
there's a big underground group of people that were very interested in us bringing it over. We actually were asked by fans of Treasure to bring it over, and we got lucky enough to get it.
This should happen more often.
GameSpy: Was there any pressure to remove the "tate" mode from the U.S. version (where you rotate the screen)? Michael Gjere: Yes, there was, because we don't want people getting killed by turning their television sets counterclockwise. But as a producer, I felt it was an incredibly strong and cool feature.
Nice to see him realize how welcome it is to have the TATE mode here. Knowing America however, some kid will become a pancake under a 50'' TV and Infogrames will get sued.
We're very hands off, because we know Treasure's had bad experiences before, and we wanted this to be a successful product that Treasure would back, as well as our company.
More good news; glad to see they don't have the "let's tamper with brilliance" philosophy that Working Designs did.

Let's see...
"Tate" translates roughly as "standing up." To capture the screen dimensions of the arcade, you can turn your TV on its side and turn on TATE mode. This displays the game at a 90° angle, so when you've got your TV on its side, the game's screen is correctly oriented and is taller than it is wide, similar to how it is in the arcade. Your ship is at the bottom of the screen, moving upwards, and enemies approach from the top of the screen. It's like reverse-letterbox format. It sounds cool, though I'm not sure if it's worth the manual labor. --- When in doubt, just use Cauchy's Inequality! (<sum>(x_i^2))(<sum>(y_i^2)) >= (<sum>(x_i)(y_i))^2 |

...or little Billy.
It's easiest for people who have computer monitors and/or screens designed to be turned vertically like that. Though, most TVs can handle it as well, as long as you give the color some time to readjust after you turn it before you actually turn on the TV and game. Of course, with a big enough TV, viewing the game normally with black bars shouldn't pose a problem. --- The Scientist knows best... IKARUGA The best game you'll never know about.
