Whoops.

Well,I meant by variations is that while Mario may be a little quicker,Dr. Mario hits harder. It's enough for me to see the difference.

And PG,how did you do that? What's the quickest way to get the little pain?

New earthbound game is coming out, you likely already know, but It is new news to me. Earthbound was a revolutionary game in many respects, as it was one of the first games to bring RPing out of the dungeon, and into various other eras This made some of the best games possible, and many of our conventions about modern RPG's are drawn from this game with its simplistic, colorful, Vibrant graphics, It's innovative re-hash of the old "Young Boy On A Quest" plotline, and it has a number original characters. I also like how it parodies American pop culture. Most people don't realize it, but Ness's dad is reflective of the "Perfect Dad" that many teenagers wish for: Sends lots of money, and doesn't ever come home from work.

Combine them.

I use Zelda on projectile heavy guys, and Sheik on those who get too close.

Also, for some strange reason...I can beat the living **** out things as Jigglypuff and Peach...

Zelda/Sheik is one of my favorite characters. I use each about 50% of the time, perhaps Zelda slightly more.

Basically, if there are three or so fighters against me, I use Zelda. If I'm in a one on one, I'm more likely to use Sheik. It also depends on the course. Sheik has some of the best connecting moves and air attacks in the game (at least for me) and I find Sheik very effective at some stages, like Rainbow Ride.

Sheik can really add on the damage to someone, especially if you keep connnecting, attack after attack. I can smash a bit better with Zelda though, so usually I switch to her when the enemy's damage is high or the match is almost up.

As I bump my completely free-form videogame topic, I thought I'd mention Joe & Mac for SNES is one of the dumbest games I've ever played. The hit detection isn't as bad as Action 52...but it's up there. The game is also terribly imbalanced...stage 3 and 4 I found harder than 5-10, other than that stupid last boss.

That is the link, of course, to the new Mario Sunshine screens, all four of which look real.

About Bowser, that doesn't look like the actual living, breathing king of the koopas to me. Rather, it looks like an amusement park ride. Plus, look in the background: seems to be a circus/midway scene of sorts. Oh and look in Bowser's mouth...a little hole where the fire comes out. It's obviously just a big mechanical structure. So still, we don't know if Bowser will really be in this game.

And then we have the water mario again...the building in the background looks to be from the port town level, so whatever is happening here must take place there. But anyway, look! Not only has he got a sword, but it's just an extension of his arm. Cool. And is that a shield forming from the other arm?

Pherhaps the water Mario is the stranger that frames Mario for covering the island in that goop? He could be there, doing it, Mario shows up, and you have a brief fight ( Water Mario is, of course, unkillable) when you are dying, the town police (of the equivelent) show up, he runs off, not finishing Mario Off, and mario gets framed.

Some new Mario Sunshine pictures.

The lifemeter is changed so that it doesn't show a number, but rather the 8 "rays" coming off the sun icon are filled or empty to show Mario's health.

The water meter in the lower right now shows the "X button" in some of the screens...I'm not sure what this is for, since R fires water from the cannon...and I forgot what all the other buttons corresponded to.

In the upper left we have three counters: Shines, Blue Coins, and Yellow Coins (which I believe have been called Sun Coins). These counters I don't like in that they stretch too far down into the center of the screen. I hate annoying icons and stuff on the side of the screen when it intrudes like that. In fact, that's one of the reasons I never doubled my magic meter in OoT or MM- because it's annoying to see that stretched out bar jutting into the middle of the screen.

I just don't like those counters where they are, but there's nothing that can be done about it now. If only they'd be across the top of the screen like in Mario 64...

Peach looks great in this game...much more like in the old school Mario games, and less like the "Mario Party/Tennis/Golf/SSBM version.

last topic on the last page

Actually I just checked moments earlier and it was only halfway down. But anyway, no more bumping, as it's against the ToS and this topic is for game talk. Moving on...

I just finished having one of the most enjoyable action/shooter experiences in a long, long time. I just finished playing ALIEN SOLDIER. It's by none other than Treasure, and it absolutely rules. Sadly, it was only released in Japan and Europe for the Sega MegaDrive, which explains why I never heard of it before.

Basically, Treasure's games are all about big action, shooting, massive bosses, and pure fun. I haven't played their more recent efforts, but games like Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, and Mischief Makers still stand out to me today as amazing games. So then I stumbled upon Alien Soldier...

This game consists almost entirely of a series of boss fights in a row. Of course this is a Treasure trademark, but not quite like this. In Gunstar Heroes you'd face several bosses in each of the 7 stages, bosses with multiple forms, etc. But now, Alien Soldier is entirely strucured around boss fights. The WHOLE GAME is a boss rush. Each of the 25 stages is kept as short as possible, most consisting of only a few screens that you zip by in roughly 30 seconds, powering up your character, until you get to the boss. Beat it, and on to the next stage, which is a short hallway leading to the NEXT boss. It goes on like this until the end of the game. The pace simply never lets up. And the bosses are all huge and awesome, full of special effects, cool animation, and everything Treasure bosses are known for.

The story at the opening of the game is nonsensical, which is great. It's about this terrorist group attacking a planet...one of the rulers or something is fused into a baby boy, and breaks free as this bird guy (think Falco). He turns out to be the hero. Who cares about the story though, it's completely unnecessary to enjoy the game, but its silly nature is a wonderful touch.

The weapon system is sort of like Gunstar Heroes, with some of the weapons even being the same. Before you start, you pick 4 weapons out of 6. When one gets weak during battle, it can charge up while you switch to another. Each weapon requires entirely different strategies for most of the bosses. The control is excellent, and designed from the ground up for boss fights. During the game you can toggle between FIXED and FREE aiming modes whenever you want, you can hover in midair and aim in all 8 directions at will, you can speed dash across the screen, and you can double tap the shot button to deflect enemy bullets, turning them into health in the process. *thumbs up to the control*

The graphics, while perhaps not QUITE as fluid as gunstar heroes, are still very, very good, and it's amazing to see what they could do with the limited palette they had to work with. The music and effects seem like they are straight from Gunstar Heroes, another plus.

The game is also very fast. It simply seems to pump the Genesis/MegaDrive to the limit. In fact it's SO FAST that on the pause screen you can actually adjust the game and play in slow motion, if it gets to hard or you need to examine boss weak points better. This, along with 30 different screen layouts, your pack of 4 weapons, the free/fixed aiming toggle, and the overall style of the game give it a very customizable feel, full of replay value. There are two difficulties: "Super Easy" and "Super Hard" HA! Needless to say, I am having quite a bit of difficulty already on Super Easy.

The only major flaw is that it's one-player only.

Although I think I like Gunstar Heroes and Mischief Makers better, this game is VERY unique and enjoyable, with the entire boss rush focus. I'd like to say the game is a must play, especially since I was deprived of it for 7 years.

Luckily that won't be a problem. I saw a SMS video where they just float up right off the top of the screen, and only appear on it temporarily. Nicely done.

Thanks to a tip from Polas, I heard some of the music from the game. The main Dolphin town theme sounds...weird, in a good, tropical way. It's the equivalent of the Inside the Castle Walls tune in Mario 64 in how it's applied to the game. Mid way through the track is a nice, adventurous sounding part, that fits Mario well.

The warp zone music, presumably from the "super difficult" obstacle course levels, is a remix of the mario bros. theme. It never gets old, and it's nice to see a new take to it this time around...I'm glad I know how it sounds, but some will be very surprised when they first hear it in the game. It's new...yet old school at the same time.

I'm assuming Mario composer Koji Kondo is back on task again with this game, after interestingly not doing the compositions for Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, or any other recent Nintendo game. I heard the first main world's tune from an E3 demo, and that music there certainly sounds like his style, at least...

Super Mario 64 TEST
Considering Mario Sunshine is less than a month from release here, I put together a quiz for M64 if anyone wants to try. Most of the questions are fairly easy, but a person DOES have to know the game to answer some of these.

1. What world features the only one-way warp in the game? (Definition of a Mario 64 WARP: In Bob-omb Battlefield when you walk into the little cave indentation on the mountain, and it warps you higher up)

2. Two worlds share a catch phrase for a star. What is it? (For example: 'Big Bob-omb on the summit', or 'Treasure in the Ocean Cave')

3. If you collect exactly 100 coins in Jolly Roger Lagoon, how many coins are remaining in the level? (Red coins count as 2, Blue count as 5)

4. What is the minimum number of stars required to access "Tower of the Wing Cap"?

5. When you enter Jolly Roger Lagoon's lobby room, the nook on what side of the room leads to the Secret Aquarium? And what's in the other nook?

6. What is your reward for defeating a sleeping piranha plant?

7. What happens when you collect 1000 coins (in a Bowser world)?

8. What is the reward for defeating the Mad Piano?

9. What happens if you defeat a monty mole eight times in a row?

10. If you lose your hat in Snowman's Land and exit and reenter the course, where will you find it?

11. Where is the 8th red coin in 'Bowser in the Sky'?

12. What do you get if you ground pound a giant goomba?

13. What is Rainbow Ride's 5th star?

14. How many secret stars can you receive from Toad?

15. How many seconds do you have to be under to get the Secret Slide's second star?

Eh, we'll give it a shot.

1. The Tall Tall Mountain one, that leads to the slide, if memory serves.

2. "Collect 8 Red Coins". Well, it's not wrong.

3. I know a lot of things, but there's no way I count up the total coins in every level when I don't need to.

4. I think it's 10.

5. I forget, I know there's a 1-Up Mushroom in the other one though.

6. Blue coin.

7. You glitch the count and it goes to letters, or something similar.

8. You can beat him? News to me.

9. He gets one hell of a headache.

10. Don't remember, but you can do that trick where Mario carries his hat around while wearing one.

11. After the 7th one. WHOO. I think it's opposite the last pipe on a lower ledge.

12. Blue coin, I think.

13. After 4, before 6. That answer sure is getting old. I forget the order, it's probably the one on the pyramids, or maybe in the 8-coin maze.

14. Somewhere between 3-5, if I had to guess.

15. Twenty-one.

I'll check Polas' answers when I check the rest (on another board).

Anyway, I don't necessarily care if nobody is reading this, it's a good topic to keep on the board. Spoilers ahead, maybe.

I was playing Super Mario World yesterday, and noticed...

The game is about 7 worlds big, with say 8 or so stages in each one, counting the regular levels, ghost houses, castles, fortresses, etc. Each one takes maybe 15 minutes to a half hour to complete- on your first time doing it that is, including dying and such.

Now let's look at Mario Sunshine. About 7 worlds big, with 8 story shines in each one. Each shine takes (according to impressions I've read) maybe 15 minutes to a half hour, or even longer for a tougher one.

BOOM, look at that. Mario Sunshine's just as long, if not longer. It's so obvious, but yet people don't see it. So many say the game is (or will be) 'short'. What the heck? Probably the longest Mario action game EVER!

Some people seem to think each "world" in a 3D Mario equates to 1 "stage" of an old Mario game. That's trash! Some have actually said, "Well Super Mario World has 96 levels, and Super Mario 64 only has 24, so it SuX".

Whaaaaaat? A game is judged by playtime. Some of those old Mario levels were so easy to fling together. Tack on a background and stick on some sprites and you're done. Making a 3D environment is so different. It naturally takes longer to do things in 3D games.
The end.

New Metroid Prime screens today (I got mine from IGN)

Anyway, they show a few new things.

One features fighting a worm-like enemy that comes out of the lava, apparently it isn't a boss though.

Then a few more show samus in ball form on a wall. IGN said this was the spiderball move, but it doesn't look like it to me. Spiderball is from Metroid 2- it lets Samus roll directly up walls and onto ceilings freely. But here, Samus is rolling along a magnetic track on the wall. So is that really the spider ball? I don't think so. Seems like you can only roll on the ground, like normal, and just roll on a wall if a specific track is set up for you. Hardly the free form concept of the spiderball there.

Another screen shows Samus in morph ball form on a wall WITHOUT using a magnetic track, although in this case she's whizzing up the wall rather fast, leading me to believe it's simply momentum, and the move is similar to the half-pipe concept in earlier videos.

Two more screens show a boss, Thardus. Right now Thardus seems pretty stupid since I can't figure out what it is. It seems like a bunch of broken apart rocks that assemble or something. It's just too hard to tell from those weak screens.

Another screen shoes the Thermal visor, VERY nice.

And the last screens show a Chozo Temple area. IGN seems to think these screens are showing something new, but a video from E3 shows a near identical place! I don't see how they "know" this is a chozo temple either, considering I don't see any chozo statues. Well, whatever. I don't see why Chozo Statues wouldn't be in this game though, considering they are a main thing in the previous three. I told McGray months ago, "just wait, we'll get an entire chozo themed area"- and this seems to be what it is.

Metroid Fusion impressions

It offers some (perhaps confusing) story details, and some explaination of the first area in the game.

In addition, it explains the "fake" Samus running around with all of Samus' old powers. Also, apparently a computer named Adam gives you mission info and narrates the story somewhat.

After seeing more Star Fox Adventures impressions today, the game seems even MORE bland, dull, uninspiring, and lame then EVER. Seriously, there is NOT ONE screenshot that has gotten me worked up about this game. NOT one! And that's usually not the case for me with Rare games...usually their stuff seems pretty impressive...even if it's not always innovative. I'm going as far as saying that I truly think the N64 version of SFA (dinosaur planet) was more impressive (proportionally, considering the N64's specs).

So I decided to play a Rare game that DID interest me- so I bought Jet Force Gemini. I rented it the week it came out three years ago, and got roughly halfway through it. It was fun, but I never bothered buying it (sadly, I figured DK64 would be a find replacement, and I was getting that one for Christmas '99). And that's what happened to many people. They bought DK64 (a rotten game by Rare's normally higher standards) and basically ignored JFG (which sort of became a sleeper title).

So now I own it and can finally beat it...it's just an awesome game, and A LOT more old-school than most of Rare's games. Although you collect Tribals in each world, the game doesn't have the "collect them all" garbage that so many of today's platformers and action games contain. Instead, you explore many differnet planets, and fight deep into each one...the levels are long...and linear...it's just like an old action adventure game in 3D.

The enemies can be tough too...you fight insect drones and they've got surprisingly good intelligence. It's not just a boring shooter...it's not a boring collect them all game...it's something very different that comes off as a long and challenging and fun experience...and probably Rare's second best effort on the N64.

Graphics are excellent for the N64 (some repetitous textures, but not nearly as bad as, say, Turok). Music is amazing and very well done (Norgate composed it...I think he left Rare though for Free Radical, but I could be wrong there...)

Play control is a fusion of typical 3D platformer controls and FPS controls...but combined well. You could hate FPS controls and still have fun here...Lots of strafing involved, but it's all in third person, but with a close up targeting mode that mades your character transparent so you can see properly.

Other than Mischief Makers, this game about rounds out my N64 collection. HOORAY

Eternal Darkness (idem)
Dinosaur Planet
and Mickey's Adventure (which from the screen shots I saw, reminds me of World of Illusion on the Sega)
[all these games are not yet out in Europe, so the information I have is quite sparse]
Do you mind telling me a bit about these last two games? Are they any good?

The first day I made this topic I posted about SMS:

============
We've added areas that will be very hard to reach with the idea that people, because we have given them a whole lot of freedom with the controls in this game, will be able to play the game and find their own routes and try and come up with their own ways for getting some of the shine stars and items in the game. So I think we've really added a lot of freedom to the controls in this game as well.

Rather than being a kind of strategic "go from one place to another" kind of game, it's really just about the freedom of the player and being able to get out there and do what you want to do and find your own ways of having fun within the world of Super Mario Sunshine. -Miyamoto

If this is really true to the extent I would hope, that alone would make this game more fun than Mario 64 for me.
=============

Now that I've played it, wow! this really is true. I've gotten a few shines now, where after I get them, I realize "oh wait a minute, I took the "hard" route to get there, and didn't follow the arrows." This adds such a great amount of freedom and replay value to the game. This also bumps my topic.

Just watched an Ikaruga video...wow! It was from the DreamCast version (Japan-only), BUT it's coming to GC early next year...this game seems very impressive. Sadly, I never got to play radiant silvergun, but this game seems to be a semi-sequel to that, with the black and white thing thrown in. Basically, if your ship is black you shoot black bullets, and if you're white you shoot white bullets. And white bullets harm black ships and vice versa...this should really create a lot of strategy for things like bosses.

It's totally possible now that bosses spit out such an amount of firepower at once that it isn't NEARLY impossible to dodge- but rather, it truly IS- and of course you'll have to rely on switching color to actually avoid getting hit. The game's only 5 levels, but that's average for a shoot em up, and replay value is highly emphasized in this type of game. I can see myself just picking it up casually for a little while, rather than playing one of my longer adventure games...

The GC version is supposed to have a few updates from the DC one (not sure if graphics improve or not, but it doesn't matter, they're excellent as they are...) so will I buy it? Well, it's definitely a possiblity...though, as Scumbag told me, if I really want it, I'd better pick it up sooner rather than later, considering the demand (TREASURE) and shipment size for that type of game.

Thoughts on Rare, that I'm reposting here from a different topic.

Nintendo's sold all that 49% now, and apparently Microsoft has bought Rare and will reveal it the day after Star fox adventures is released, on September 24, at some xbox show in Spain. o_O

Anyway, there have been rumors of third-party or microsoft for a long time now, and they all seem to be true. Rare isn't a huge loss to nintendo as far as innovations go, but as Mars said, they tend to perfect or give their own take on Nintendo's ideas, as seen with Banjo Kazooie (based on Mario 64). Rare does come up with their own good stuff every so often though.

Now, I haven't been looking forward to many of Rare's games lately. All summer, Star fox adventures has looked drab and I don't think I'll be getting it...I'll read the reviews and maybe try it out before I make my final decision, but on the whole the game doesn't seem very impressive. The big loss for me with Rare gone is two titles: Donkey Kong Racing and Perfect Dark 2.

I don't think PD2 was ever even announced officially before, but we all knew it was in development in some way or another. Now it seems that if Nintendo owns the license, the PD series goes extinct, for good. But if Rare owns it, they could make PD2 as an xbox exclusive. Being that PD was one of my favourite N64 games (and favorite FPS ever), PD2 is alluring, but I would never buy an xbox for just one game, and who knows if it'll even be as good as the first anyway. Besides, Timesplitters 2 is by ex-Rare employees and based on GE and PD, so if I wanted a good FPS in that vein, I could get that one. We'll see; normally I'm not into the FPS genre.

The other disappointment is Donkey Kong Racing. Although we saw next to nothing about this game, it seemed to hold a lot of potential. Now of course, we won't be seeing this game, period. Kind of sad, considering it was on the back of the GC box, along with Kameo. (who cares about Kameo though, I had no interest in that anyway.)

Microsoft is buying out all the good developers. Konami has gone the way of Rare also. In any case, they also have designs on square, which while it isn't too big of a loss for me, a lot of people would be pissed off.

ah well i have a few things to say so get ready to get bored.

first of all, yes scientist jet force jemini is a great game, the only fault i can find with it is multiplayer mode but who cares.

a week ago i beat eternal darkness, it's a pretty good game but it's not too dificult, i beat it on the green setting but i'm not real eager to go for blue or red. right now i'm currently working on my fav system the snes, i'm playing ff3 and kirby's avalanche. i've been trying to get kirby superstar for a long time but it hasn't worked out so far.

super smash brothers melee i have unlocked all the characters and i think all the places but one. i think the hardest event match is space invaders or 7 years. someone give a opinion about that please.

the snes controller, the controller that refuses to break no matter how many times i throw it-em pleh

I found the one with Ness at Fourside annoying. Can't remember the number.

SO MUCH FOR ZELDA. 'Big surprise', Nintendo's site says "June 2003"

http://www.nintendo.com/games/topten.jsp

If it comes out in Japan this December as currently scheduled, and we have to wait SIX MONTHS, I will be very angry. Because the delay will NOT be to make the game better, but for stupid business reasons. This happened with Majora's Mask as well, although they did give us the ability to save at owl statues, something not available in the Japanese version.

But still, this has far more problems then advantages. I know some of you kids are going to go ahead and read the ENTIRE FAQ that someone who imported the game wrote, and once you know every item, boss, puzzle, story surprise, and dungeon, you'll leak it all around all the boards. And then after that, you'll have the gall and nerve to bash the game when it comes out and write terrible reviews on it, on the basis of things like, "I wasn't surprised", "it's too short", "it was too easy", and "It just didn't have the feel or sense of excitement the other Zeldas did for me, like Ocarina of Time."

GEE, I WONDER WHY!!!!!!!!!

***DOINK!***
